Matthew Perry Has Died at 54

Friends star Matthew Perry is dead today at 54. He was discovered by law enforcement in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home. Police officials did not reveal a cause of death, although People notes it was an apparent drowning. No foul play was suspected, and there were no drugs found at the scene.

Perry, of course, is best known for playing Chandler Bing (“Miss Chanandler Bong”) for ten seasons on Friends. Despite the massive success of the series, Perry struggled with addiction throughout its run and for many years after that. He wrote about his struggles, as well as his near-death experiences in a memoir published last year.

After Friends, Perry had some minor success on the big screen in movies like 17 Again, The Whole Nine Yards, and Fools Rush In. He also starred in short-lived sitcoms like Mr. Sunshine, The Odd Couple, and Go On. His best work, post-Friends, may have been in dramatic recurring roles on The West Wing and The Good Wife.

Though he had a series of romances over his career with Julia Roberts, Yasmine Bleeth, and Lizzy Caplan, Perry never married.

This is a hard loss. May he rest in peace.
