Martin Short And Meryl Streep Deny Dating Rumors, Are 'Just Very Good Friends'

Over the weekend, social media was aflutter with rumors that Meryl Streep and Martin Short were dating. Meryl played Martin’s love interest in the most recent season of Only Murders in the Building, and they sat together (with co-star Selena Gomez) at Sunday’s Golden Globes:

I heartily approved this gossip. Both Meryl and Martin seem like sweeties, they’re cute together, and their romance is age-appropriate (a rarity for an older man in Hollywood): she’s 74, he’s 73.

Alas, the speculation didn’t last long. This morning, a rep for Martin informed PEOPLE that his client and the great Meryl Streep “are just very good friends, nothing more.” Hmph. Fine.

Back in October, we learned that Meryl and her husband, sculptor Don Gummer, have been low-key separated for six years. They married in 1978 and have four kids. Martin Short married actress Nancy Dolman in 1980 and they shared three children. Nancy died of ovarian cancer in 2010.

Listen, I know Martin has denied the rumors, but what if the mere suggestion of romance kicks things up a notch? What if Martin secretly has a crush on Meryl? Now that the story is out there, he has the perfect in: “Me and you together? Mer, can you imagine? LOL. Except, now that I’m thinking about it… it’s not that crazy. Is it? Hmmm? What do you think? And, for the record, if you say no, I’m totally joking.”
