Kevin Smith — a man almost as synonymous with marijuana as Cheech, Chong, Seth Rogen, and Snoop — has put down the blunt. The host of the Fatman and Beyond podcast is not only thin now but he’s also not stoned, essentially for the first time since smoking a joint with Seth Rogen on the final day of production on Zack and Miri Makes a Porno. I have no idea how the man managed to lose that much weight before he stopped smoking weed, but the munchies will no longer be an issue for him.
The Clerks III director broke the news on Instagram and the Fatman Beyond podcast. “I can say this — this is the first Fatman Beyond that I’ve done not stoned,” Smith said on the podcast. “So I am present. I quit smoking weed, it was five weeks yesterday, so I am crisp and very here, kids. Very alert! Is this what this show’s like? What the f—k?”
Whether a coincidence or not, Smith essentially broke with the studio system on Red State, the first film he made after becoming a stoner. I loved Red State, but then he made Tusk and Yoga Hosers, and the less said about those, the better. More recently, Smith has largely been mining nostalgia with the heartfelt and crowd-pleasing Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and Clerks III. I am legitimately curious to see what Smith comes up with now that he’s on the straight and narrow again. I wouldn’t mind seeing another entry into the ViewAskew universe completely unrelated to his previous films.
In the meantime, he has four projects “in development” but only one of those has gone as far as “pre-production,” Twilight of the Mallrats, his Mallrats sequel. He’ll also be appearing along with several members of the Mallrats cast — Jason Mewes, Ethan Suplee, Joey Lauren Adams, and Jason Lee — at Astronomicon in Detroit tomorrow.
