Kal Penn, best known for Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, 24, and randomly popping in and out of Clarice, will publish a memoir tomorrow called, You Can’t Be Serious. In the memoir, he makes a revelation that I don’t think anyone saw coming. From People:

In You Can’t Be Serious, Penn details his first date with Josh and being shocked that his future partner a) arrived at his apartment with an 18-pack of Coors Light and b) instantly switched the TV to watch NASCAR.

“I thought, ‘This obviously is not going to work out,” he recalls. “I have one day off from The White House and this dude is unironically watching cars go around and make left turns? Next thing you know, it’s been a couple months and we’re watching NASCAR every Sunday. I’m like, ‘What is happening?’ I wanted the reader to enjoy the love and the humor through all of those stories.”

Wait, what? Kal Penn — Former Associate Director, White House Office of Public Liaison in the Obama Administration — is a NASCAR fan? He watches it every Sunday? Wow. I did not see that coming.

Oh yeah, and Kal Penn also revealed that he’s gay, has been dating his boyfriend, Josh, for 11 years, and that they are engaged. Thankfully, his friends and family have been supportive. “When you’ve already told your Indian parents and the South Asian community that you intend to be an actor for a living, really any conversations that come after that are super easy.”

It’s unclear if the difficult “conversations after that” refer to his love life or his love of NASCAR. Either way, congratulations, Kal Penn!
