Jordan Klepper has made a name for himself by going to Trump rallies. He visits them on behalf of The Daily Show, interviewing rally-goers (and rioters). He’ll ask the tough questions, the obvious ones, and everything in between. At first, it felt like the MAGA Many were oblivious to what the correspondent was doing (some still do). As the years have gone on, Trump’s supporters have become more hip to Klepper’s act and more hostile. Still, Jordan has managed to avoid being hurt.
That may seem like a low bar, but we have seen these rallies erupt into violence. Hell, Klepper was witness to one of the most infamous instances of Trump Rally violence. He still managed to emerge unscathed. The comedian has seen it all and walked away without taking any damage. It is something I have often wondered about, as we usually only see Klepper on camera. Turns out, there are quite a few more folks around him.
Klepper, along with the other Daily Show correspondents/hosts, recently sat down for a For Your Consideration event in NYC. At one point, he was asked point blank how he avoids getting his ass kicked at these rallies. He begins his answer, as you would expect, with a truth-laden joke. “Well, I have a couple things. One, I’m a white guy at a Trump rally. It helps,” Klepper joked.
Then, The Daily Show team member went on to explain that he is not alone in these field pieces. “I’m a tall white guy.” Klepper points out that he has “four security guards” who accompany him. “I will say when we started doing this, going out in the field, you didn’t need a security guard because you were an improv teacher a week and a half ago,” he explains, “so the idea that somebody would want to kill you or murder you seemed asinine. And yet—here we are, walking into spaces to talk about politics with four armed guards, but that’s what comedy wants in 2024.”
What Klepper does can be a bit antagonistic to the Trump faithful. So, it makes sense that he would need a security detail. It is still no less depressing that it is something necessary for him to have. He’s not doing anything that would warrant violence against him. But, as he says, this is 2024. This is the world we’re dealing with, and it includes a slew of people who think The Daily Show is part of the evil media elite who need to be eradicated.
