The subject of last night’s weekly Jon Stewart rant on The Daily Show is the oversaturation of Trump trial coverage. Why is the media so preoccupied with this trial? Why is it getting 24-hour coverage? Why are the pundits describing what Trump looks like in the trial, as though we haven’t seen him on our television screens every goddamn day for eight years? Why are we obsessing over courtroom sketches, the traffic his caravan contends with on the way to court every morning, and the coif of the man’s hair?
Jessica Williams, who left The Daily Show in 2016, soon after Trevor Noah took over from Jon Stewart, makes a surprise return appearance in this week’s episode to say to Stewart: Shut up, old man, and let the media have its fun. “We need this messy bullshit spectacle. Every other news story is a massive bummer. This Trump trial is like an open window in a Greyhound bus full of farts. Why are you trying to close the window, Jon? Why are you trying to make us smell farts?”
Stewart has a good point, but so does she. Coverage of the trial is completely overblown, but the alternative is a bus full of farts.
