Hollywood has never been a safe place for women over the age of 40, but last night, on the Golden Globes red carpet, it was. The mothers were mothering, as it were. Let us review:

Nicole Kidman

She may not have won the award for her role in Babygirl, but she gets the MOTHER award for Best Dressed from yours truly. And don’t worry, it’s like Nikki Glaser said, she makes, like, 18 movies a year, so, she’ll be fine.

Demi Moore

Demi Moore’s press and awards season run since the release of The Substance has been a marathon of a “try not to say ‘mother’ challenge,” level: impossible. Last night, she won her first-ever major industry award for her role in the film, officially proving she’s so much more than a “popcorn actress.”

Amy Adams

It’s only appropriate for Amy Adams to be included in this category when she was nominated for her role in Nightbitch, a film about motherhood and its challenges.

Sheryl Lee Ralph

She was officially inducted into the Mother Hall of Fame last year with her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the Emmys, and now she’s just Mothering all over the place like it’s easy. Long may she reign.

Jean Smart

She once again took home the Best Actress in a Comedy Series award for her role in Hacks, so any celebratory shots taken with Kate Winslet were well deserved.

Kate Winslet

She’s a “legend” and so is that pantsuit.

Michelle Yeoh

The Mother to Jeff Goldblum’s Zaddy, she slayed the boots house down, alright.

“Mother” is a celebration, nay, a reclamation of empowerment and style for women over a certain age, and sort of like how every square is a rectangle but not every rectangle is a square (I learned that in geometry class in high school and have used it in moments like this ever since, so please don’t correct me if I’m wrong), all Mothers can be Babygirls, but not all Babygirls have quite earned the title of Mother. And thus, the Babygirls of last night’s carpet include:

Zendaya

Zendaya almost transcends categories like Mother and Babygirl for something entirely her own, but she’s always included in the Best Dressed of Wherever She Goes.

Emma Stone

Every time Emma Stone appears on a red carpet, she launches a thousand haircuts. Hairdressers everywhere: start practicing your pixies now.

Cynthia Erivo

I’m holding space for Cynthia’s arms, today. Please be gentle with me at this time.

Selena Gomez

I don’t always love Selena’s fashion choices—it sometimes feels like her stylist wants to hide her body—but this blue on her is exceptional. She’s finally being taken seriously as an adult actor lately, and the confidence that brings is visible in her poise, but I know she’ll always be Babygirl in Steve Martin and Martin Short’s hearts.
