Sheryl Lee Ralph and Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Hughes have been married for 18 years. A couple weeks ago, Sheryl went on Extra and Billy Bush (wait, Billy Bush still has a job??) asked her, “How do you keep it fresh?” She responded, “We don’t live together!” Sheryl explained:
“I see him every two weeks, and when I see him I’m so happy to see him. And when I leave I’m so happy to leave, cuz I know I’ll be back again. Yeah, it works.”
On Monday, The Jasmine Brand reported that Sheryl, 66, and Vincent, 67, recently made the decision to move in together. An “insider” alleged that “regular visits every two weeks” were “no longer enough”, and Sheryl would make the move from L.A. to Pennsylvania: “She will still travel to L.A. to work, but the moment the camera stops rolling, she’s heading home to her husband.”
But not so fast, “insider”! Last night, Entertainment Tonight’s Nischelle Turner caught up with Sheryl at the Elle Women in Hollywood event, and asked her about the story:
“So, I read the headline, and I can’t wait to see Sheryl and ask about this… ‘After 15 Years, I’m Finally Moving In With My Husband’?”
Sheryl wasted no time in correcting Nischelle’s “15 Years” and the rumor in general:
“Girlfriend, first of all, you know Vincent and I have been married going on 19 years. We have been together for 21 years. Abbott Elementary is shot in Los Angeles. My husband, as a senator, is always in his capital. So I don’t know what magic people think we’re gonna do!But we see each other on the average of every two weeks. And everybody who questions that, I say, ‘Guess what? We’re still married.’ It works for us. And we’re happy.”
When Sheryl and Vincent got hitched in 2005, she was living in L.A. and he was living in Philly. Last year, Sheryl told the Philadelphia Inquirer that she visits Vincent more than he visits her:
“First of all, 20 years, keeping this marriage together, you have to be together sometime,” she said. “Vincent is not able to leave the state the way I can leave the state. In fact, in 20 years of our being together, I’m going to say my husband has maybe been in California, maybe, 25 times. That means I’m in Philadelphia every two weeks.”“After 20 years, people still don’t know or realize that we’re married,” she said. “That I live there part time. It’s always like, ‘What are you doing there?’ ‘Um, I’m married to Sen. Hughes. I live here.’”
Hey, if the long-distance thing works for Sheryl and Vincent, good for them! They both get to flourish in their respective careers and they probably don’t annoy each other as much as regular couples. So what if Vincent never shuts the kitchen cupboards? So what if Sheryl snores like a pug with breathing issues? Approximately 84% of the time, they don’t have to deal with it!
