Demi Lovato has been in the news for the last few weeks because of some weird, stalker-y ex-boyfriend who is putting on a pathetic show on social media, and in an effort to understand it all and wrap my brain around it a few weeks ago, I found myself doing a deep dive on Lovato herself. I didn’t know much about her at all except that she had dated Wilmer Valderrama and she wasn’t the musician who licked a donut and put it back (that was Ariana Grande. Also, ew).
Anyway, over the course of that research, I found myself really pulling for Lovato and becoming invested in her as a person, which is an odd admission, because aside from her version of “Let It Go,” (the one played over the Frozen credits), I could not tell you a single song that Lovato has ever performed.
However, last night at the Billboard Awards, Lovato introduced her latest song. It’s called “Commander in Chief,” and it’s a legit powerful indictment of Trump and his cruelty. It’s a very good song. There’s a music video out for it this morning. I am impressed, and I am really surprised that this is the first mainstream specifically anti-Trump song probably since Green Day’s in November 2016. Where have our anti-authoritarian musicians gone?
