Many of you may remember former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling for one of the many of his greatest hits: Homophobia/transphobia, Islamaphobia, his rants about creationism, his support of the January 6th insurrection, and of course, his old standby: The Jews control the world!
In fact, it was only last week that Schilling — who also owns Nazi memorabilia — reposted to Twitter a tweet about “The Jewish Question,” the answer of which is “The Final Solution.” Schilling is the rare baseball player with Hall of Fame numbers who has been rejected, not because of steroids, gambling, or because he cheated in other ways, but because he’s a terrible human being.
This week, he found a new way to be terrible. On his podcast, Schilling publicly revealed the cancer diagnosis of a former teammate. “Tim Wakefield, you remember Tim Wakefield, the knuckleballer, is sick,” Schilling said on his podcast. “And I talked with [former Red Sox pitcher] Doug Mirabelli yesterday, and this is not a message that Tim has asked anyone to share, and I don’t even know if he wants it shared, but …” Schilling decided to share it anyway.
Schilling noted that Wakefield had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer before also revealing that Wakefield’s wife had also been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Note, here, that Schilling is not friends with Wakefield or his wife. He revealed the diagnosis because he “believes in the power of prayer” and thought that he should alert his listeners so that they could pray for Wakefield.
Wakefield did not want that. In fact, the Red Sox released a statement on his behalf asking for privacy.
“We are aware of the statements and inquiries about the health of Tim and Stacy Wakefield,” the Red Sox said in a statement on behalf of the Wakefields. “Unfortunately, this information has been shared publicly without their permission. Their health is a deeply personal matter they intended to keep private as they navigate treatment and work to tackle this disease. Tim and Stacy are appreciative of the support and love that has always been extended to them and respectfully ask for privacy at this time.”
Schilling also elicited a response on Twitter from former Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek’s wife, Catherine Varitek: “f**k you Curt Schilling, that wasn’t your place!”
Exactly.
