My wife and I met at the Jacobs Theater in New York City. I was bartending and she was working merchandise. One day, I made my way down the stairs and saw her standing behind her booth. I was awestruck. Never before had I experienced something like that (and I never will again). I immediately approached a friend and said, “Who is that?” She was with someone at the time, but we became friends. Now, almost 12 years later, we have two kids and a whole lot of love.
Nothing captures my attention like love. I love it when people are in love. It can make anything better. So, I will drop whatever I am doing to listen to someone tell me how they met their partner (and I’m always happy to share my story). It’s not just that the stories themselves are often sweet, it’s seeing the look on someone’s face as they describe such a personal and lovely moment.
About a year ago, that’s what Colman Domingo was doing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The now Oscar-nominated Domingo was hot off his first Emmy nomination. Over a couple of glasses of champagne, he explains how he saw his husband for the first time outside Walgreens. Two days later, they reconnected on Craigslist and have been together ever since.
I don’t mind spoiling the story because I think you should watch it anyway. You can feel the love emanating from Domingo as he describes this meet cute. There is a sense of wonder at how it all came together. We get to see Colman Domingo be a bit of a hopeful romantic. It is lovely.
It has been a big year for Colman Domingo, so I don’t mind taking this double trip down memory lane. I’ll add a twitter link with just a story but you can watch the full interview on YouTube here. You should do it! Colman Domingo is getting his flowers; basking in that joy is a true delight.
