The Oscar nominations are in. Everyone has feelings on the subject, of course, and now the real campaigning begins. Most nominees send out a press release expressing their gratitude. It used to be terribly gauche to admit you got up at 5:30 am, L.A. time, to watch the nominations be announced. Nowadays, it’s half the fun. You can check out a list of very touching thank yous on Awards Daily, but for us, the most fun ones are the live reactions. For all of the ragging we do on the Oscars being silly and kind-of worthless, you can’t deny that it makes your heart sing a little to see these people’s hard work pay off so wonderfully.
Godzilla Minus One received a somewhat surprising nomination for Best Visual Effects (I say ‘surprising’ because the competition was tight and this category tends to lean very Hollywood.) Director Takashi Yamazaki and his team watched the noms live and had the party streamers out. Notice how all of their little Godzillas on the table were also waiting expectantly.

Justine Trief became only the eighth woman to receive a Best Director nomination for Anatomy of a Fall, which received five nods overall, including for Best Picture. Please enjoy these happy French people.

The Last Repair Shop is a short documentary on a team of craftspeople working out of an L.A. warehouse to repair musical instruments. The filmmakers and crafts teams were in the warehouse watching the news come in of their nomination.

As did Billie Eilish.
Lily Gladstone called into GMA too, on the morning of her historic Best Actress nomination (ABC hosts the Oscars, so this is probably why.)
