In this week’s episode of True Detective Night Country, Christopher Eccleston’s character makes his debut, and before the episode is over, he’s involved in an intense sex scene with Jodie Foster’s character. That scene came up in an interview that Eccleston gave to the Independent, where the former Doctor Whothat he was once falsely accused of groping a co-star.
“I did a sex scene with an A-list actress - not Nicole Kidman, who was brilliant - and she implied, in front of the crew, that I was copping a feel. Because she didn’t like me.” His anger at the injustice is evident, although he concedes he was “fortunate that happened to me before the Harvey Weinstein stuff came to light, so I wasn’t put in the stocks for it. But I’ve never felt more betrayed by a fellow actor than I did that day.”He pauses, then adds: “I have to say to you that I would sooner have put my hands in a food blender than copped a feel of that person. It was an abuse of power, what she did. I don’t think that would have happened with an intimacy coordinator on set. I could have been accused of all manner of things… that’s about what passes between actors, with trust and the abuse of it.”
The natural first reaction of most people who read the above is to ponder the identity of the A-list actress. I did some research and came to my own conclusions. I’ll keep that to myself. Everyone else is free to do their own research and draw their own conclusions, as well.
What’s interesting about the reaction beyond that, however, is how readers perceive Eccleston after reading his quotes. I’ve read several comments across the Internet that treat it as an admission of guilt or an effort to get ahead of damaging news. These people say Eccleston won’t reveal the identity of the actress because it would blow back on him.
There are others, perhaps those more familiar with Eccleston’s outspokenness, who believe the statements are in line with what they expect from the working-class actor who has never shied away from calling out others, particularly those with higher status; he’s known for taking on the class ceiling in the UK and for shitting on the monarchy.
He’s also known for being candid, once remarking that while working on GI Joe, he wanted to “cut my throat every day. And Thor? Just a gun in your mouth.” In other words, Eccleston probably doesn’t care what others think, and while he wouldn’t want to be canceled, he also understands and agrees that “white, straight men” are “quite rightly” the “new pariah” in the entertainment industry.
