Yesterday, Selena Gomez took to her Instagram Stories to reflect on her changing body. The 31-year-old posted two swimsuit pics: one from 2013 and another from last year. In the first photo, Selena’s body is, well, smaller, which makes sense; she was 21 when it was taken. Who among us is the same size we were in our early twenties? Not I.
Selena captioned the first picture: “Today, I realized I will never look like this again…” And the second: “I’m not perfect but I am proud to be who I am… sometimes I forget it’s ok to be me.”
You know, sometimes Selena’s social media game gives me a mean case of the eye-rollies, but I appreciate her posting these Stories. Very few celebrity bodies actually age, grow, and fluctuate like normal ones do. Super-skinny is back on the rise, thanks to Ozempic and the Kardashians getting rid of their fake butts, but, let’s be real; for most stars, thin was always in. I’ll never forget what Julianne Moore told a magazine back in 2008: “I’m hungry all the time. All actresses are hungry all the time.” That’s an eating disorder.
This isn’t the first time Selena’s been open about her changing body. In an interview back in October, the star recalled how she gained weight after getting surgery for her lupus. Not long after, she went to a fitting for a magazine photoshoot, and came to the realization that she no longer “had a teenager’s body”:
“None of the sample sizes were fitting, and that would make me feel embarrassed. Although how unrealistic is it to expect a normal woman’s body not to change?”
Selena says the meds she takes for her lupus, kidney issues, and high blood pressure cause weight fluctuations. Earlier this month, after social media gave her shit for how her body looked at the Golden Globes (see header pic), Selena went on Instagram Live and said, “I’m a little bit big right now because I enjoyed myself during the holidays.”
I can’t snark on a celebrity like Selena going from thin to less thin (remember, like Jennifer Lawrence before her, she’s nowhere neeear plus-size) without declaring her intention to drop the weight. And these Instagram Stories are a positive message to send to her fans, many of whom are young girls totally brainwashed by filters, buccal fat removal, and drastic weight loss before-and-afters on TikTok. Not to mention all the Chiclet veneers, Botox, and Whoville-style Turkish nose-jobs. Is anybody else on Turkish-rhinoplasty-Tok? No? Just me?
