I am not a gun owner. I abhor guns, and I live in a kind of parenting culture where it’s not unusual to ask if there are guns in a home before you allow your children to go on a playdate. It’s weird, especially having grown up in Arkansas where every other person I knew had a gun. But even if I weren’t anti-gun, having gone to law school, I know there’s three things you should never have in your home if you have children: Guns, swimming pools, and trampolines. They are all torts just waiting to happen.
So I was a little surprised to learn that Brad Pitt has a gun in his home. Brad Pitt? The guy married to Angelina Jolie? They’re very liberal people! But then again, given where he’s from — born in Oklahoma, raised in Missouri — I shouldn’t have been suprised or alarmed. He says that he was firing guns by the time he was eight (which is probably about the age when I shot my first and only gun), and he has a “profound and deep respect for the weapon.”
He also says he wouldn’t feel safe in his home without a gun.
“It’s very strange, but I feel better having a gun. I don’t feel the house is completely safe if I don’t have one hidden somewhere. That’s my thinking, right or wrong,” Pitt told the Radio Times.
And you know what? As anti-gun as I might be, and despite the fact that he has six kids, and knowing that it’s practically impossible to hide a gun from children, I don’t begrudge him that. He and his wife are two of the most famous people on the planet, and the planet is full of nutjobs, and they do have six kids to protect. You never know when some looney might scale the fences of what I assume is their compound, shoot tranquilizer darts into the necks of the security guards, break through the home alarm, and attempt to kidnap a Jolie/Pitt child and hold it for ransom.
In that position, I might feel safer with a gun, too.
