Richard Plepler, chairman and CEO of HBO, made an announcement today that is going to blow the roof of the television world. They’re going full Netflix. No longer will you need a cable subscription in order to watch HBO programming.
Here’s what Plepler said, according to an HBO press release:
“That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO. “So, in 2015, we will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top, HBO service in the United States. We will work with our current partners. And, we will explore models with new partners. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.”
That’s a game changer. Look out, Netflix. Look out, Amazon. Look at cable providers, because you know this will be the first of many channels that will eventually begin to offer their own stand-alone services, which will eventually mean an al a carte model streaming model.
Most importantly, it means less piracy, and more people watching Game of Thrones and True Detective and The Leftovers.
The future keeps getting closer and closer, doesn’t it?
