Ben Affleck is on the promotional trail for Animals, his latest drama in front of and behind the camera. It’s an abduction thriller about a politician whose son is kidnapped, with Affleck in the lead alongside Kerry Washington, Steven Yeun, and Gillian Anderson. Promo mode is something Affleck typically excels at. He’s a great interviewee, and that’s evident in his latest sit-down with Variety.

He talks eloquently and informatively about the biz, touching on topics like the shaky revival of theatrical runs for big movies, the decline of the movie-star, and his and Matt Damon’s company Artists Equity, which seems to give greater profit shares to the involved creatives. He really knows his stuff. Usually, his private life is so obsessed over that his savvy as an entertainment industry player is downplayed or ignored. He is a bit timid in discussing the Skydance merger (the interview happened a week before the deal was confirmed), but he’s also clear in his passion for film. Plus, he’s self-aware enough to know that all the memes about him are funny. “I became a meme for “the beleaguered man,” as my daughter calls it,” he says.

I highly recommend you read the whole piece because Affleck is truly interesting and has a lot to say about the intersections of art, business, and celebrity in 2026. But the internet is a tough way to make a living and you know I had to cherry pick the juiciest bit for the headline. Yup, we’re talking about downstairs Affleck. Armageddon-it. The last dueller. His dawn of justice. His DunKing. Look, I’m bad at puns.

“So I lost a bet at the office and have to ask you this,” says Matt Donnelly, the interviewer. “There is some debate about “Gone Girl,” about whether you wore a prosthetic for your shower scene with Rosamund Pike. What’s the truth?” I mean, it’s a fair question. I certainly wondered if that full frontal moment was all natural Boston goodness. It’s not unusual for actors to wear a fake one or use a body double, be it for privacy reasons or, in the case of Willem Dafoe, because the real thing is “confusingly large.” But Ben reassures us that he is a committed performer. “I wore no prosthesis. I’ve only worn one in one film, “Hollywoodland.” It was a nose.”

That was a solid fake nose. I had no idea it was fake. See, you learn something new every day.
