Back in the stone ages, when the first Ocean’s 8 trailer came out (it’s not just me right, doesn’t it seem like December was a million years and twelve thousand Trump bullshitteries ago?), I thought to myself, “self, who the fuck is Awkwafina? Am I reading that right, Awkwafina?” I filed the sudden appearance of Awkwafina in my life under “things I must have missed because of my advanced case of the olds” (it’s a woefully thick file). Turns out Awkwafina is not related to pop-tart dolphin Sextina Aquafina at all!
It wasn’t until I came across her brilliant video for “My Vag” that I understood what Queens native Awkwafina (born name Nora Lum) was all about. She’s a rapper, actress, comedian, travel writer, talk show host, and self-proclaimed shitty dancer who double majored in women’s studies and journalism. And she’s just getting warmed up.
Most recently, Awkwafina can be seen in the newly released trailer for Crazy Rich Asians opposite Constance Wu. In addition to Ocean’s 8, she’s also had roles in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and an indie comedy called Dude, which recently had its Netflix debut.

Awkwafina is killing it right now. Here’s her 2013 viral hit “My Vag,” which I love slightly more than I love her heartfelt plea to Mayor Bloomberg to not include giant margaritas in his sugary drinks ban. She explains the impact having a “second vestigial gooch” has had on her life, you know, as an Asian woman, on the track “Mayor Bloomberg (Giant Margaritas)” which can be found on her 2014 album Yellow Ranger.
