There are celebrities that we consider iconic, who despite weird cult affiliations, problematic hair situations, or, yes, bizarre scarf collections, we still unilaterally understand them to be major stars. And only very, very extreme circumstances can remove that halo effect.
Johnny Depp just lost whatever remained of his halo.

For the entirety of their marriage, Heard has been seen as a gold-digging homewrecker. Now, she has a tragically new story—wife abused since the beginning.
Quickly filing for divorce, Heard has supplied photos of her abuse to the court—including the above. According to Heard, Depp hit her with his phone, the outline of which you can see. This might explain his camp’s need to get out immediately with the now assuredly suspicious claims that his family didn’t like Heard. That story was exclusively shared with TMZ, and if you have any question whether or not TMZ is in Depp’s pocket, here’s some quotes from the post in which they released the Heard photo:
Amber Heard just showed up in court with a bruise on her face claiming Johnny Depp physically assaulted her and she’s the victim of repeated domestic violence … TMZ has learned, but sources connected to Johnny are calling BS, saying Amber “is an affront to real victims of domestic violence.”
It’s interesting … she’s asking for a temporary restraining order claiming there’s an immediate threat of harm, but Depp has been out of town since Wednesday promoting his new movie. Depp’s lawyer, Laura Wasser, appeared on his behalf.TMZ broke the story … 3 days after Depp’s mom died, Amber filed for divorce. And one week after his mom died, she’s claiming domestic violence.
As for why Depp and his people are calling BS … first she never filed a police report, and she posted Instagram pics after the alleged beating and never showed any injury.
The judge did grant the order, since very rich celebrities are able to come and go as they please and quite quickly (you’d think TMZ might know that).
This may all be news to us. But with some digging, it’s not new to Depp. Take this from the Kate Moss biography Addicted to Love:
And this, from The Guardian:
He got into brawls. Sometimes he was vaguely suicidal. Sometimes he cut his arm with a knife. One time he got a tattoo on his right arm to signify his love for Ryder - Winona Forever, it read - and when they broke up he could take the pain of only so much tattoo removal; it now reads Wino Forever. He wasn’t having much fun. The same imagination that served him so well in the movies messed up his personal life. He was jealous beyond words. ‘Oh boy. Oh fuck. I was a professional at it. Oh, the scenarios I dreamed up. Oh fuck. Oh. I mean, world-class. I was. I could see ink pens on the desk, and hairbrushes, and oh, fuck…’He drank more - bourbon, neat - and became more volatile and began to decay. In September 1994, he reportedly got into a pretty loud fight with then-girlfriend Kate Moss in the $1,200-a-night Presidential Suite at New York’s Mark Hotel, which led next-door guest Roger Daltrey, of all people, to complain to the management, which led to Depp’s forced eviction, a few hours in the pokey, much lurid press and, in the aftermath, vastly increased bookings for the Mark. Depp later claimed he was simply out to squash a cockroach: ‘I was trying to catch this bug, and a couple of articles of furniture just happened to get in the way.’
And even Winona Ryder, whose relationship with Depp I have personally held up as a meaningful favorite, said “I remember my first boyfriend used to smash everything.” She has repeatedly referred to Depp as her first boyfriend.
When you’re really, truly rich and famous, you can hide anything. You can hide it for a really long time. Bill Cosby did. Mel Gibson did. Sean Penn is still doing it. But sometimes, someone comes forward. And you have to listen.
Now it’s up to us to listen and believe.
