Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer trounced all competitors this weekend at the box office, and while TK’s positive review was one reason to go see it, my default answer when it comes to people asking whether one should go see a Denzel movie is: F**k you, that’s a stupid question. Denzel is in it, isn’t he?
As I wrote in my 2 Guns review:
Denzel makes two kinds of movies: Movies where Denzel gets to be a bad ass, and movies with a message where Denzel gets to be a bad ass. He only makes the latter every once in a while these days to remind everyone that Denzel is still the best goddamn actor of his generation, so shut the fuck and leave him alone so he can make movies where he shoots people.
Equalizer falls into the “shoots” people category, which also has its own subcategories: Movies where Denzel shoots people opposite a younger white guy; or movies where Denzel shoots people to save a young, teenage girl (here, Chloe Moretz).
People love when Denzel pulls out his gun and flashes that grin that’s half charming and half psychotic. In fact, Denzel put up his third highest opening ever (behind American Gangsters and Safe) and continued his streak of 12 straight Denzel movies that have opened with more than $20 million.
How does Denzel celebrate yet another Denzel box-office hit? He goes on the Graham Norton show, and he dances like a motherf*cking Pip.
And if that’s not enough, Queen Latifah puts Denzel on the spot, and he spits out a mean Jay-Z impression:
