Recasting the Major Superhero Movies with Vintage Hollywood Stars

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (69)

In the world in which we occupy, there is so much copy devoted to the casting of superhero movies that the films themselves often feel like an afterthought. Fanboys will often make up their mind about a film as soon as the lead has been cast. When Christopher Nolan recently chose Anne Hathaway as his Selena Kyle (Catwoman) in The Dark Knight Rises, there were actually people — despite Nolan’s track record — who gave up hope on the third film, who reckoned that Nolan had lost it, that the franchise had jumped the fridge. Meanwhile, three people in the world objected to the casting of Henry Cavill as Superman because he’s British, but there were about 4,000 posts across the interwebs dedicated to defending the casting choice against those three objections. Last week, when word broke that Lois Lane might not be the lead female in Man of Steel, there were a hundreds more articles devoted to who the character might be and who might play her.

It’s a game. A meaningless, but often fun game, this speculation. It’s like the free-agency market in baseball — movie blogs are sports talk radio for another demographic. It’s dream casting. Nobody gets hurt, so who are we to object?

In that vein, however, I thought: Let’s take that speculation to the next level. What if we were recasting the major superhero movies today using only actors from the 1950s and ’60s? Using what we know about the kind of person that the studios are looking for with these parts (based on who they have already cast), below are my choices.

You have a problem with them? Come up with your own. That’s the glory of the Internet. If enough consensus gets behind one choice, maybe it becomes next week’s rumor: “Zack Snyder decides to digitally insert Charlton Heston as Lex Luthor in Man of Steel.” It couldn’t be any more absurd than the Lindsay Lohan as Ursa rumors floating around right now.

Ann Margret- Goddamn!

And are you sure that's not 'The Heigel' playing Natalie Wood?

Posted by: EJ at February 9, 2011 12:40 PM

So much pretty...

Posted by: jM at February 9, 2011 12:40 PM

On behalf of Mr. Julien: Natalie Wood? Bunk!

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at February 9, 2011 12:43 PM

I vote Eartha Kitt as Catwoman.

Posted by: Robert at February 9, 2011 12:44 PM

Warren Beatty as Bane.

You know that's a luchador mask, right? And that the character is latino?

Where is Pookie when I need some indignant rage?

Posted by: superasente at February 9, 2011 12:45 PM

Oh, Jaysus....the eyes. Peter O'Toole.......

Posted by: dammitjanet at February 9, 2011 12:46 PM

I don't know about Lauren Bacall as Lois Lane. Can she do the crazy/ditzy part? Maybe Bette Davis.

Also, young Greg Peck and young Norman Bates and young Jimmy Stewart and young Peter O'Toole are all SO DREAMY. *sigh*

Posted by: Anna von Beav at February 9, 2011 12:46 PM

Paul Newman (with dyejob) as Iron Man?

Posted by: sars at February 9, 2011 12:48 PM

Diana Rigg as Catwoman? Or is that too Avengers-esque?

Posted by: Anne (in Reno) at February 9, 2011 12:50 PM

...and something for Britt Ekland. She's just so prrty.

Posted by: sars at February 9, 2011 12:51 PM

Ha! I was going to say Gregory Peck.

I don't like Redford as Batman. Batman needs a bit of crazy just like Catwoman needs to be dangerous. How about Steve McQueen and Dorothy Dandridge?

And Jimmy Stewart is too nice for Hal Jordon. Paul Newman was good at playing likable jerks.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at February 9, 2011 12:52 PM

Ursa

Posted by: Jay at February 9, 2011 12:53 PM

Orson Welles as Lex Luthor? Be still my panties.

Posted by: Internet Magpie at February 9, 2011 12:54 PM

I was wrong. James Garner for Hal Jordan.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at February 9, 2011 12:55 PM

I like that James Dean isn't even named. He's just "Spider-Man."

Posted by: Kelly Anne at February 9, 2011 1:03 PM

Steve McQueen should be Captain America, I think. Robert Redford as Iron Man. I always kind of imagined Paul Newman would make a good Bruce Wayne from Batman Beyond, so by the time travel transitive property, a younger Paul Newman would make a good contemporary Batman.

Or something.

Lee Meriwether was already the purrrrrrfect Catwoman.

Posted by: RobP at February 9, 2011 1:04 PM

James Garner for Hal Jordan

You are correct.

Posted by: Jay at February 9, 2011 1:05 PM

Lee Meriwether was already the purrrrrrfect Catwoman

Do you take the same amount of shit I do for that opinion?

Posted by: Jay at February 9, 2011 1:05 PM

Alfred Hitchcock as the Penguin. Just a little less evil laughing, more evil deadpan.

Posted by: sars at February 9, 2011 1:10 PM

"How about Steve McQueen and Dorothy Dandridge?"

Damn, Tracer, my heart skipped a beat.

Posted by: Elmo Tee at February 9, 2011 1:11 PM

If Supes had been untouched by the small screen in the '50's Rock Hudson would have made a great Superman.

Posted by: Mr.West at February 9, 2011 1:11 PM

Mmm...yes. SO much yes.

Gregory Peck with the little forehead curl?

*drowns in own saliva*

Posted by: Lexie at February 9, 2011 1:21 PM

Old X-Men

Professor X -- Donald Pleasence
Cyclops -- Paul Henreid
Storm -- Alfre Woodard
Jean Grey -- Rita Hayworth
Colossus -- Charlie Bronson
Beast -- James Garner
Wolverine -- Clint Eastwood
Iceman -- Paul Newman

Magneto -- Richard Burton
Mystique -- Racquel Welch because GOD DAMN One Million Years B.C.

Posted by: D-Day at February 9, 2011 1:44 PM

Young Peter O'Toole. Gregory Peck.

I really can't think of much to say about this list except:

Earth Kitt as Catwoman, DAMMIT!

Posted by: The Wanderer at February 9, 2011 1:45 PM

Oh, young Marlon Brando for Batman. Mmmmm young Brando. Only had a little bit of crazy at the time.

Posted by: Anna von Beav at February 9, 2011 1:48 PM

Robert Redford for Daredevil.

Steve McQueen for Captain America

Natalie Wood for Lois Lane

And a thousand times yes for Orson Wells for Luthor.

Posted by: Sean at February 9, 2011 1:52 PM

Look, you cast Yul Brenner as Lex Luthor and you do it NOW! Didn't any of you people see Westworld? The Ten Commandments?
"So shall it be written...So shall it be done."

I would also accept Magneto.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at February 9, 2011 1:53 PM

Alfre Woodard?! Is that the only black actress you know? PAM GREER.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at February 9, 2011 2:00 PM

Wow, Warren Beatty. Very hot in his prime.

Posted by: Jadine at February 9, 2011 2:01 PM

Warren Beatty and Robert Redford in one movie. I think my knickers just evaporated.

For Iron Man, I was actually thinking of Errol Flynn, although he's in the wrong era. Marlon Brando has the same bad-boy aura but I'm not sure if he has the charm factor. Warren Beatty could work, if only for the "I *can* charm the fatigues off of an Army nurse" factor.

Posted by: Maureen at February 9, 2011 2:02 PM

i love SUPERMAN cast but i disagree with Redford as Batman(i'm OK with Steve McQueen as Batman)

Posted by: carrie at February 9, 2011 2:04 PM

D-Day, I'll see your X-Men and raise you an X-Men circa 1990:

Prof X: Patrick Stewart (perfect casting is perfect casting folks)
Cyclops: Kevin Costner
Storm: Iman
Jean Grey: Angie Everhart
Colossus: Arnold Swartzenger
Wolverine: Bob Hoskins
Iceman: Michael J. Fox

Magneto: Max Von Sydow
Mystique: Cybill Shepherd

Posted by: superasente at February 9, 2011 2:12 PM

humphrey bogart as Rorschach, jack lemmon as nite owl, anthony perkins as doctor manhattan

Posted by: idleprimate at February 9, 2011 2:14 PM

Dustin, this is your best idea ever.

I forgot how awesome these stars were at their peak.

These dream-teams are too much for mortal brain to withstand.

Posted by: OldSchool60 at February 9, 2011 2:16 PM

Lauren Bacall Lois Lane

Of all the strong, beautiful brunettes in their heyday prior to the total blondification of Hollywood, you couldn't pick a single, solitary one of them to play Lois Lane?

Posted by: coryo at February 9, 2011 2:16 PM

Alfre Woodard?! Is that the only black actress you know? PAM GREER.

Dear Tracer,

Pam Grier doesn't need a super-power to fuck people up. I wouldn't change a damn thing about her.

Also, you fucked up the spelling. That'll cost you one black-dude card.

Love,
Whitebread

Posted by: D-Day at February 9, 2011 2:16 PM

mickey rooney as jimmy olsen

Posted by: idleprimate at February 9, 2011 2:22 PM

judy garland as kitty pryde

Posted by: idleprimate at February 9, 2011 2:22 PM

Alfre Woodard?! Is that the only black actress you know?

That appears to be the case.

Posted by: sars at February 9, 2011 2:23 PM

it is a fun game. if i didn't have to go to class, i'd play this one all day until i ended up casting peter lorre as the mole man and the penguin, in the same year, confusing people as to why he was in both the DC and Marvel universe at the same time.

Posted by: idleprimate at February 9, 2011 2:24 PM

I'm with EJ, I suspect the Natalie Wood back-and-white is actually Heigl done up. The eyebrows and teeth aren't right.

I'm just old enough to remember Natalie Wood films, and that, I suspect, is not her.

Otherwise, this post is only just short of perfection.

Posted by: trib at February 9, 2011 2:26 PM

@Mrcreosote: Yul Brenner for Luthor? I likee.

Because Yul Brenner always brings to my mind Omar Sharif (proving that I am, as Avenue Q claimed, a little bit racist), what superhero do we all think for Omar Sharif? Iron Man could work; perhaps Batman?

Posted by: Maureen at February 9, 2011 2:28 PM

JIMMY! NATALIE!

Happiness.

Posted by: grace b at February 9, 2011 2:28 PM

You know what all these actors have that the current fresh crop do not? YOU CAN TELL THEM APART!

Cary Grant as James Bond.
Ingrid Pitt as any Bond girl.

Posted by: BWeaves at February 9, 2011 2:42 PM

How about Myrna Loy as Lois Lane?

Posted by: mswas at February 9, 2011 2:52 PM

Yul is much more of an xavier than a lex

Posted by: idleprimate at February 9, 2011 2:56 PM

Oh man, that Spider-Man dream cast is breaking my HEART. And not just because I'm an Ann-Margret superfan.

And yes, her name is hyphenated. I did say superfan.

This is a fun game, but ultimately depressing.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at February 9, 2011 2:57 PM

After reviewing this very excellent list I've come to the only reasonable conclusion.

Modern actors and actresses (deep breath)
SSSSSSUUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!

Jimmy Stewart as Hal Jordan is brilliant.

Posted by: Lucas at February 9, 2011 3:08 PM

O'Toole rules so hard.

Posted by: Martin at February 9, 2011 3:10 PM

Reed Richards - James Franciscus
Sue Richards - Ann Francis
Johnny Storm - James McArthur
Ben Grimm - Alan King
Doctor Doom - Christopher Lee

Omar Sharif as Ras Al Gul. To Warren Beaty's Bruce Wayne

Posted by: Sean at February 9, 2011 3:14 PM

How about Maureen O'Hara as Mary Jane Watson?

Posted by: mswas at February 9, 2011 3:28 PM

Myrna Loy as Lois Lane is an inspired choice. I was going to say Rosalind Russell.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at February 9, 2011 3:30 PM

This is one of my favorite Pajiba posts EVER!

Posted by: mfg at February 9, 2011 4:49 PM

I'm going to have to put the kibosh on Dorothy Dandridge here. You'll recall that Halle Berry has already played Catwoman and Dandridge. That kind of cancels out Dandridge herself, since she's already effectively done it through Berry.

Posted by: Jerry at February 9, 2011 5:45 PM

"Myrna Loy as Lois Lane is an inspired choice. I was going to say Rosalind Russell."

Myrna Loy is the way to go here. Much as I love Russell, she already played Hildy Johnson. Also, although her hair color is wrong, Jean Arthur was always good at smart-but-ditsy and world-weary-but-idealistic.

Posted by: KateNonymous at February 9, 2011 6:15 PM

Dean Martin as Iron Man.

Gotta be.

Posted by: Bronson at February 9, 2011 7:40 PM

Me again

Fantastic Four circa 1990
Mr. Fantastic- Kevin Kline
Invisible Woman-Sharon Stone
Human Torch-Brad Pitt
The Thing-Fred Ward
Doctor Doom-Jeremy Irons

But this whole thread reminds me of the famous Orson Wells Batman hoax

Posted by: Sean at February 9, 2011 8:08 PM

Stewart as Jordan? Somehow I can't buy a Jordan that would stutter in front of girls. Besides, there's already one: Gil Kane based Hal Jordan on Paul Newman.

Posted by: JLRoberson at February 10, 2011 2:41 AM

And: Burt Lancaster as Batman(THERE'S your Dark Knight Returns Batman. Him or Brian Dennehy) and Peter O'Toole as THE JOKER.

Posted by: JLRoberson at February 10, 2011 2:43 AM

>>...and something for Britt Ekland. She's just so prrty.

Valkyrie.

Posted by: JLRoberson at February 10, 2011 2:46 AM

YES to the casting for Orson Welles, Anthony Perkins, and James Dean.

Perhaps Warren Beatty as Iron Man?

Posted by: Ajoy at February 10, 2011 3:19 AM

@Idleprimate, I am ashamed to say that I also was wondering what James Franco was doing on this list. However, I wasn't able to figure out it is actually James Dean...

Let's call it a drawback of being young.

Posted by: Matthijs at February 10, 2011 3:37 AM

Heston as Captain America might be a good fit too. You know he'd sell the patriotism angle.

Posted by: Brett at February 10, 2011 10:48 AM

I am in awe of the respect shown by you commenters.
You. Are. All. Awesome.

(Hah! Dennehy as DKR Batman! Pefect!)
