Five Episodes Of Television For Which To Be Thankful

Unlike Halloween and Christmas, Thanskgiving sort of gets short-shrift in terms of themed episodes on American TV. Oh, there have definitely been more than a few installments over the medium’s nearly hundred year history, but the holiday doesn’t really get annual episodes devoted to it in abundance. With a couple of exceptions (which are represented below), Thanksgiving simply doesn’t register as highly on writers’ and showrunners’ radars, which is sort of odd since more people in this country probably celebrate Turkey Day than celebrate Halloween or Christmas (whether they like it or not) — due to religiosity or being crumb bums.

Or, I don’t know, maybe it’s just because the type of drama and/or comedy that can occur on Thanksgiving is fairly universal and everyone’s seen and experienced some version of it already, and it’s one of the rare times when TV land doesn’t want to capitalize on the universality of a subject: Mad dash for the turkey, cranberry sauce everywhere, political arguments with family members, grandpa asleep on the recliner, football. Then again, basically none of the below entries really deal with any of that…

In any case, because of the relative dearth of Thanksgiving-themed entertainment, let us give thanks for those television episodes that do the holiday justice. There are plenty I’ve missed that you’ll probably think I should have included — “The West Wing,” “The Sopranos,” and “Gilmore Girls” come to mind — but these are the ones that I am most thankful for. Feel free to add your own in the comments, just try not to get gravy all over the place.

Without further ado… my Top Five Television Episodes That Celebrate Thanksgiving:

“Seinfeld” - The Mom and Pop Store

“Friends” - The One With The Football* The One With All The Thanksgivings

* No suitable/embedabble video could be found, sadly.

“South Park” - Helen Keller

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” - Pangs

“How I Met Your Mother” - Slapsgiving

Honorable Mention For Being The First Thanksgiving Episode I Remember Watching That Wasn’t A Charlie Brown Special

“The Simpsons” - Bart vs. Thanksgiving

Honorable Mention For Reminding Us That We Should Be Thankful For Some Performers Before They Become Talentless Hacks

“Saturday Night Live” - Adam Sandler’s Thanksgiving Song

Happy Turkey Day, everyone! :gobble gobble gobble:

Sadly, "Pangs" is the only Thanksgiving episode I have seen.

BUT, it was pretty damn awesome.

I don't think Kevin Nealon is talentless.

I really like the episode Hungry Man from season 4 of Dexter where he just loses his shit and chokes Arthur with his belt. Pangs and Slapsgiving are fantastic episodes too.

I love everything about this list. Another favorite: the Brad Pitt Thanksgiving episode of Friends. Classic.

You just served up some great appetizers, but you missed the main course by a mile. Without Les, Mr. Carlson, and the turkeys mounting a counter attack, I feel like I just got a heapin' helpin' of tofurkey. They have Turkeys Away on iTunes. Might I suggest that it is the best $1.99 you'll spend this holiday season?

"Thanksgiving" episode of Northern Exposure for the win!

The Buffy Thanksgiving episode is one of my favorite Buffy eps of all time.

Roseanne had some great Thanksgiving episodes during the first few seasons.

The WKRP Thanksgiving episode is the best of them all, even better than the Friends episodes.

In Canada, the turkeys say "gooble gooble."

Gilmore Girl's Thanksgiving episode is a classic in my opinion.

Surely I will be watching it today!

The Sopranos - "He is Risen"

The South Park episode with the wild swarm of turkeys tearing the town apart is pretty spectacular, too.

Anybody else remember the "Kate & Allie" Thanksgiving episode? They tried to get a last-minute turkey but couldn't find one anywhere and ended up buying assorted parts and putting together a Frankenturkey, complete with three drumsticks.

I used to love that show, alright? I was too young for original-run SNL, so it was my first exposure to Jane Curtin.

I hate on The Daily Beast, especially Andrew Sullivan.

I'm with funtime42. If you haven't seen the WKRP Thanksgiving episode, it's worth checking out. Never gets old. "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly..."

Les Nessman: It's flying something behind it and I can't quite make it out. It's a large banner and it says H A P P Y... T H A N K S... giving... from W... K... R... P! What a sight, ladies and gentlemen. What a sight. The 'copter seems to circling the parking area now. I guess it's looking for a place to land. No! Something just came out of the back of a helicopter. It's a dark object, perhaps a skydiver plummeting to the earth from only two thousand feet in the air... There's a third... No parachutes yet... Those can't be skydivers. I can't tell just yet what they are but... Oh my God! They're turkeys! Oh no! Johnny can you get this? Oh, they're crashing to the earth right in front of our eyes! One just went through the windshield of a parked car! This is terrible! Everyone's running around pushing each other. Oh my goodness! Oh, the humanity! People are running about. The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement! Folks, I don't know how much longer... The crowd is running for their lives. I think I'm going to step inside. I can't stand here and watch this anymore. No, I can't go in there. Children are searching for their mothers and oh, not since the Hindenberg tragedy has there been anything like this. I don't know how much longer I can hold my position here, Johnny. The crowd...

Dr. Johnny Fever: Les? Les? Les, are you there? Les isn't there. Thanks for that on-the-spot report, Les. For those of you who've just tuned in, the Pinedale Shopping Mall has just been bombed with live turkeys. Film at eleven.

West Wing! Bartlett gives Charlie his family knife. Cry my eyes out every time.

Posted by: Julie at November 24, 2011 9:57 PM

I hear Thanksgiving episode, I immediately think the Cheers episode where they get in the massive food fight. Absolute classic in my mind.

With God as my witness I thought turkeys could fly.

My two greatest nemeses: Rachel Green and complex carbohydrates.

Posted by: Socrates_Johnson at November 25, 2011 12:04 AM

WKRP for the win.

Must give credit to Herb for the turkey bombing, it was his promotion. Freaking hysterical!

Friends always had great Thanksgiving eps. Like Roseanne and Halloween, Turkey Day belonged to them.

Diane dressed as a Pilgrim trying to maintain order and her dignity while stuffing flew past her head, priceless.

We have a tradition of changing to the Helen Keller South Park whenever the football game gets boring and playing the Gobbles Drinking Game. Every time Timmy says Gobbles, everyone yells Gobbles and takes a drink. Traditions are what the holidays are all about.
