The Most Pathetic People in America? Or the Most Gleeful?

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Miscellaneous | Comments (25)

The image above is that of scores of Twilight: Breaking Dawn fans lined up five (5) days in advance at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, not to see the movie, mind you. But to see the stars of the movie walk past them and into the theater themselves. On the one hand, Jesus, that’s really sad. On the other hand, good for them, good for them for having the passion to line up 120 hours in advance to catch a glimpse of Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, for having the enthusiasm about something, and for doing something that will no doubt make them happy. It calls to mind that line from Paul Rudd in Knocked Up, as he watched his gleeful children running around the playground. “I wish I liked anything as much as my kids like bubbles.”

I would kill to want to see a movie as much as these people want to see Breaking Dawn. But honestly, I’d much rather play with bubbles than actually sit through it.

How can you tell them apart from Occupy Los Angeles?

I love a lot of things...but I can't think of anything I'd wait in line 5 days for. I don't even think I'd want to love anything that much. Or maybe I just hate waiting in line.

Who doesn't love a good queue?

Posted by: Jast at November 10, 2011 1:04 PM

, took the words out of my mouth.

I think some people like that standing in line, being part of a group thing. These are the same people that like rollercoasters and Twizzlers. Random thought of the day.

Posted by: the other courtney at November 10, 2011 1:33 PM

Don't these people have jobs? Or, more likely, school? Or some sort of societal or familial obligations?

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at November 10, 2011 1:57 PM

Na, that's just awful. You can still anticipate things without being mind numbingly pathetic. I mean I'd sell your left nut to get my hands on Skyrim, but that doesn't mean I'll wait in line for five days on the off chance I'll get a chance to look at a copy being brought into the store.

Posted by: googergieger at November 10, 2011 2:12 PM

These are easily the most pathetic.

Look, I'm all about being passionate about something. Hell, I have no problems being passionate about not so mainstream things. But this is just pathetic. They're not doing anything.

I used to be pretty passionate about World of Warcraft (shut up). I'd spend hours each week not only playing, but learning the math behind the game so I could better min/max my character. Then when I went and raided with my guildmates and killed some big ass video game dragon, I was that much better at the game, which also made their experience that much more enjoyable. I had an effect on something.

These people? They're just observers. There's nothing wrong with anticipation. There's something wrong with anticipation taken to an unhealthy level. That's not passion; that's just sad.

I'm not sure about a good queue, but I definitely love good 'cue.

Oh please, like you don't know anyone who lined up early for concert tickets or a, oh, I don't know, Star Wars movie. It's the idiocy of youth and enthusiasm and it's theirs to enjoy.

I lined up several hours early for Return of the Jedi to buy tickets for me and my BFF; however, I was able to get into an earlier showing, so I abandoned the line and left my BFF ticketless. It was 28 years ago. She has forgiven me. I'm still not so pleased with myself.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at November 10, 2011 2:38 PM

Wow, that's sad.

However you are comparing waiting in line to get something versus waiting in line on the chance to see someone, right?

Posted by: googergieger at November 10, 2011 2:44 PM

This is getting pretty fucking ridiculous for what is ostensibly a movie review site. Brett Ratner, Rick Perry, Eddie Murphy, Joe Paterno, and a random line of ‘Twilight’ fans...

Damn, people- you still haven’t found enough targets to be hating on??

Posted by: special snowflake at November 10, 2011 2:52 PM

I'm with googergieger. I'll stand in line to attend something but not to watch others do so. Then again, I never understood the people hanging out at the Oscar (or any) red carpet either. Especially in a country where you can't get liquored up in public.

What website have you been visiting special snowflake? Since when is Pajiba "ostensibly" just a movie review site. It is, ostensibly, a website which focuses on all aspects of the movie industry, including reviews; has additional interest in books, TV, and celebrity culture; induldges in random deserved bitchiness; and it is also whatever the hell Dustin sees fit to publish and the readership responds well to. Please find another avenue of complaint.

So, what do you call the opposite of a sausage-fest?

Posted by: jon29 at November 10, 2011 3:25 PM

A clam bake?

A clam bake?

(faints)

(lifts up head)

This is getting ridiculous.

"I would kill to want to see a movie as much as these people want to see Breaking Dawn."

I think I know where you can start.

Mrs. J laying the smack down on the heretic and then giving us a vulgar comment! I'm shocked and aroused.

At first I read that as "scores of Twilight fans lining up to see Nikola Tesla." Imagine my disappointment.

The zombie corpse of Tesla? I'd join them in a thrice!

I scrolled past this all day thinking they were lined up for a job with only two positions available. Wow. I just can't even finish the one paragraph here.

All these girls would be single also, because every guy they would date would not meet their standards as they are not like 'Edward' enough. I wish I was joking, but it does happen.
