That was ... glorious - truly glorious.

  • Thanks, hh. That was every bit as painful as I had hoped. I'd also love/hate to see a montage of villains telling heroes "you just don't get it, do you?".

Posted by: laredo at May 5, 2010 2:21 PM

hh is a genius. It's always a good day when there's another one of these videos.

Posted by: squeeziee at May 5, 2010 2:23 PM

awesome, as is your want, hh.

Posted by: rg at May 5, 2010 2:27 PM

I have no sound at work... sads. I can't WAIT to watch at home.

hh, you are an unparalleled genius.

Posted by: MM at May 5, 2010 2:32 PM

I just love the variety of sources. From Band of Brothers to Arachnaphobia to Honey, I Shrunk The Kids to The Dirty Dozen. hh does it again (as always).

Posted by: branded at May 5, 2010 2:35 PM

Looping the scene from Grosse Point Blank for four minutes would've been enough; but this was awesome awesome awesome stuff.

Posted by: NY not NYC at May 5, 2010 2:36 PM

Producing videos of this quality one after another and I'm supposed to believe this is just one person?

    Get the fuck outta here.

Posted by: PissBoy at May 5, 2010 2:43 PM

hh is a genius. I really can't fathom what will be next.

Posted by: krza at May 5, 2010 2:48 PM

The urge to leave my office was so strong after watching that that I had to start drinking. Thanks hh.

I had no idea humbert humbert was such a fine video editor.

Posted by: mswas at May 5, 2010 2:50 PM

hh is like the Banksy of video editing. He's so mysterious and brilliant.

Or it's just Hubert Humphrey fuckin' around.

Posted by: kyle at May 5, 2010 2:52 PM

Brilliant...is that clip of Avatar stolen though? I hope it doesn't get taken down. Unless that line was from a commercial.

Also that scene in Arachniphobia? Instant heebie jeebies.

Posted by: Lindsay at May 5, 2010 3:04 PM

forty seconds in and that phrase has already lost all meaning.

Posted by: Steph at May 5, 2010 3:16 PM

That be excellent. Thank you hh!

Posted by: Cindy at May 5, 2010 3:19 PM

    There are no words.

Posted by: Nadine at May 5, 2010 3:44 PM

    hh: For your consideration:

    "Just hold me!"

It's way overused in soap operas, and may be in movies, too. I didn't realize it was a "line" until we did a little sex role reversal one evening with the guys who lived downstairs, and they swore it was a line, and us girls swore it wasn't. Then we heard it about 10 times the next day while watching soap operas, and we had to agree it was the worst line ever.

Posted by: BWeaves at May 5, 2010 3:46 PM

    I am in awe hh.

    hh

    Humbert Humbert?

    Sorry.

    Great mashup!

Posted by: The Wanderer at May 5, 2010 5:28 PM

How about all the scenes where someone is saying something bad about another character, then stops and says: "He's right behind me, isn't he?"

Posted by: greg at May 5, 2010 6:11 PM

Well done, hh! Although, after a while I just got "Manna Manna" stuck in my head...(all together!)

    Doot dooo do do do

    Get out of there!

Oh, and Lindsay, Avatar's out on DVD now.

Posted by: vic at May 5, 2010 6:44 PM

Hahaha, vic has ruined that song for me forever.

Not that it's a bad thing.

Posted by: MyySharona at May 5, 2010 7:56 PM

    vic, that was hilarious.

And thanks hh, keep on keeping on.

Posted by: Katie (KP) at May 5, 2010 8:42 PM

hh, I bow to your genius.

And I love everyone's suggestions for future mashups.

How about one of all the best insults in the movies?

"I'll explain and I'll use small words so that you'll be sure to understand, you warthog-faced buffoon."

Posted by: Jelinas at May 5, 2010 8:50 PM

Once again, fantastic HH. You seriously merit your own pajiba poll / post with suggestions for your next masterpiece. I would love some of the best reactions to one-liners or events. Of course, 2 minutes would have to be bruce campbell, but I can live with that.

Posted by: "luker" the barbarian at May 5, 2010 9:08 PM

Shooting - a collection of all the impossible shots made by the good guys, juxtaposed against the horrible aim of the bad guys. I'm looking at you, Imperial stormtroopers.

"Only Imperial stormtroopers are so precise...", my ass.

Posted by: greg at May 5, 2010 9:16 PM

    Great video by hh.

I'll second the "Greatest Movie Insults of All Time" idea from Jelinas.

Posted by: Fredo at May 5, 2010 10:40 PM

Avatar is out on DVD already? That seems so fast! Either that or Mr. Lindsay has been slipping me roofies again and I've been losing blocks of time. It's still February right? Unusually warm winter we're having! Global warming HAHAHAHAHA.

    What?

Posted by: Lindsay at May 5, 2010 10:40 PM

hh >> I don't know who you are or where you, but rest assured that if our paths ever cross, the first round is on me. Outstanding and entertaining work as always. Keep them coming!

Posted by: cydeleida at May 6, 2010 9:44 AM

I'd like to nominate "This wasn't part of the plan"

Posted by: Stew at May 6, 2010 10:48 AM

Awesome as always, but I note the egregious omission of Commander Kruge (Christopher Lloyd) from Star Trek III.

Posted by: Rykker at May 6, 2010 11:19 AM

I can't even imagine how one would go about making something like this. Just watch every movie ever made for examples?

My favorite part was just how many of these included "get the HELL out of there!".

Posted by: figgy at May 6, 2010 12:23 PM

    Rykker,
Kruge's "get out of there!" was the inspiration for the whole thing, so I was surprised that it didn't make the cut. It could almost replace Lithgow as the finale in that montage. Dude was intense.

It's not so much exposing the repetition of the line that's amusing as it is exposing the repetition of the situation symbolized by the line. Sure, there are certain lines that are repeated, but it's the constant reliance on the same unnecessary situations that deserves to be lampooned.

    a few more ideas hh,

    "The Clap"
A technically challenging montage I'd love to see is a compilation of slow claps, with a consistent rhythm maintained throughout. Whether used to pull the heartstrings or to show a villain's smug sarcasm, at this point it only succeeds in getting a groany laugh.

    "Clip Show"
A montage of weapons being reloaded in stylish and retardedly impractical ways. You know the ones: some stone-faced chick in black vinyl flying through the air and slamming two empty handguns down on a pair of full magazines in slo-mo. Terminators spinning a lever-action rifle to cock it and jerking off a pump shotgun.

"You Still Don't Get It, Do You?"
Mentioned above and still one of my least favorite movie cliches. Hopper to Reeves in Speed is a classic example.

    "Bottom of the 9th"
Any time a character in a sports film tells other characters where our heroes stand at a critical juncture in the big game, match, race, tournament, whatever. It lets us know that the stakes are high, since the film might not have actually produced any real sense of drama and suspense. It also may be due to studios making a "film for everyone" that involves a cool sport/activity undertaken by almost no one (bungee jumping rifle marksmanship) which requires much more exposition than if the film were about something that more than 5% of us do everyday. Who would want to see that, though? They'd probably talk a lot and stuff.

    "I'm in."
Clips of people dramatically saying they're in.

    "Won't Need This Anymore..."
Any time a person in a dangerous situation discards a weapon, often after using it only once, when the danger has obviously not passed. This one is right up there with cell phone failure in the horror film handbook of stupid ideas to artificially put/keep the heroes in jeopardy.

    "Uhhhhh...Sure..."
No one ever believes anyone who has seen something weird. Take an extra shot if the sheriff/boyfriend/parents, etc. prove to be not just unhelpful but actually obstructive.

    "N350SC"
When you recognize the same helicopter showing up in several movies, and you're not a helicopter or movie nut, it's time for them to get a new chopper. Then there's the famous PKE meter from Ghostbusters that shows up as a communication device in They Live. Celebrate the reuse in montage style. That thing with the three red neon tubes in it from sci-fi movies could be a film in itself.

    "Whattawe Got?"
You've seen it. A plain-clothes detective in an unmarked but coppy-looking car rolls up to a fresh crime scene, parks haphazardly, and gets the crime scene tape lifted for him/her as he/she swaggers through the sea of unis holding back the throngs. Another cop, an ME, a CSI, or whatever, someone on the scene, meets them in mid-stride and our game-faced hero(ine) tosses out the question that kicks off the whole thing. It's another constantly regurgitated trope; the audience loves to imagine being so important that they can park sideways in front of a fire hydrant, a corpse, and 20 cops.

    "Oh, and Johnny...One More Thing..."
After a lengthy conversation, a powerful and menacing character at a desk dismisses the character he sent for, but as the person is leaving, there's one more thing...there's always one more thing. It's realy the only thing that matters in the scene, and it's usually a threat.

Get out of there Kurt Russell!

    and

    Sharkbait! Get him outta there!

Easily my favorites. Great work hh.

Posted by: Coltrane at May 6, 2010 10:36 PM

I think we need a montage of just movie montages. You know, the training scenes in Karate Kid and Rocky and every other sport film; end of life/deathbed montages of someone's life like in Vanilla Sky. Even the South Park puppet movie montage about montages:

The hours approaching, just give it your best
You've got to reach your prime.
That's when you need to put yourself to the test,
And show us a passage of time,
We're gonna need a montage (montage)
Oh it takes a montage (montage)

Show a lot of things happing at once,
Remind everyone of what's going on (what's going on?)
And with every shot you show a little improvement
To show it all would take to long
    That's called a montage (montage)
    Oh we want montage (montage)

And anything that we want to go from just a beginner to a pro,
    You need a montage (montage)
Even Rocky had a montage (montage)

    (Montage…montage)

Anything that we want to go from just a beginner to a pro,
    You need a montage (montage)
Oh it takes a montage (montage)

Always fade out in a montage,
If you fade out, it seem like more time
    Has passed in a montage,
    Montage

You missed another Christopher Lloyd/Star Trek great one! Near the end of ST III - The Search For Spock, Christopher Lloyd as the Klingon commander, when realizing he's hearing the self-destruct on the Enterprise yells for his men to... well, you know.

Great work, and great fun - thanks for doing it!

HH you are a genius, have seen three of your mash-ups now, in fact it was the 100 Greatest Insults that led me to stumble onto this magnificent site. Did you know the term "let's go" is the most common phrase used in film, love to see a mash-up of that.
