YouTube has far too many problems to list here. Yes, there are good channels on there, but the rampant reactionary and misogynistic content all over it can dwarf those very easily. I say that as someone who spends a not insignificant amount of time on the platform, but who as a result is lucky enough to have an algorithmically (all hail its mighty benevolence, long may it shine its light on me!) curated patch of YouTube real estate on which I only really encounter interesting and insightful material that doesn’t try to recruit me into a crusade against women or immigrants.
I don’t follow any of the really big channels, and I am blissfully unaware of even their existence for the most part. As a result, I do find it easy to forget just how terrible YouTube can be—and in how many innovative ways! Case in point, this huge YouTuber (who I’ve never heard of) pointing out just how much of a plagiarism problem YouTube has. Watching this, I’m so grateful for my niche bubble.
