There’s a fine line between trivialising something traumatic with humour, and using humour to cope with it. Sometimes the line blurs completely. As the Covid-19 pandemic has swept around the globe and our governments and their slavish adherence to capitalist dogma have proven anything but an effective counter, many of us have developed a pitch black sense of humour as a defence mechanism in response.

Though to be honest, I imagine most people have already had that developed for a long, long time. For the Millennials and members of Gen z who in their time have already lived through near perpetual capitalist crises, ceaseless wars of imperial aggression, and the looming disaster of climate change, a dark sense of humour is sometimes the only way of getting through the day. To wit, a Twitter trend that exploded yesterday, highlighting the emotional roller coaster that has been part and parcel of living in the colonialist countries of the global North, the citizens of which have been lucky enough to experience better vaccine coverage than most and thus get to feel as if the ‘end’ of the pandemic is close enough to touch, but for whom arising issues like the Delta variant serve as reminders that they are not out of the woods yet.
