Now and then, an artist comes along that leaves an indelible impact. You remember life before you knew them, but somehow that doesn’t seem possible. They feel like they’ve always been there, entertaining you. For me, that artist is Nick Lutsko. Lutsko is a singer/songwriter and one of the funniest at that. He has been active for years, but in 2020 he exploded on the Twitter … sphere(?) with a host of hilarious songs spoofing the Trump lead GOP. All the while, he was creating a mythology for a characterized version of himself, his grandma, and his attempts to make a new entry in the Gremlins Cinematic Universe.
If this all sounds wild as hell, it’s because it is. Lutsko’s songs are filled to the brim with biting satire, abject weirdness, and topical references ripped right from Twitter’s “trending” page. That’s part of what makes them so successful. Lutsko can tap into the zeitgeist with aplomb. He ensnares listeners looking for a song about Elon Musk hosting SNL and surprises them with a man covered in blood and wearing a hospital smock. He’s using popularity to spread weirdness, and I am very down for that.
Now, Lutsko is ending 2021 with a bang. In a way, his 2021 recap song “2021 Has Been So Fun” is a bit more sincere in its tone. It feels like a good time end-of-the-year anthem. But if you take in the lyrics, if you watch the accompanying video, it’s clear what Lutsko is doing. 2021 has been almost as hellish as 2020. Yet, if you looked out at certain parts of the world, it seems like people are trying to continue as normal. It’s mind-boggling and perfectly encapsulated in Nick’s video.
If you haven’t listened to Lutsko before, you’re in for a treat. I also highly recommend going back through his catalog of work. Not just the funny stuff like Songs On My Computer either. Lutsko is the real deal and his 2019 album Swords will easily become one of your new favorites. Until then, watch and listen as he recaps a most chaotic year; And be glad that he’s here to help us laugh through the madness.
