I can’t stand anything related to J.K. Rowling that isn’t about her public humiliation. It’s like I’m allergic to it and reading it makes me break out in hives. It feels like the Harry Potter universe whenever Voldemort shows up, except in this case, it’s J.K. Rowling who makes me feel uncomfortable.

Rowling, meanwhile, is dusting off her internet troll crown in case anyone was to, briefly, forget that she’s the worst. As an executive producer for the upcoming Harry Potter series announced by HBO, she’s seen fit to engage with those who have pushed back at giving even more money to someone who spends their time spitting hate at trans people. On April 21 she wrote on her Twitter:

Dreadful news, which I feel duty bound to share … Activists in my mentions are trying to organize yet another boycott of my work, this time of the ‘Harry Potter’ TV show. As forewarned is forearmed, I’ve taken the precaution of laying in a large stock of champagne.”

What an enormous, entitled ass.

If her goal was to provoke, well, job well done. With the wealth she has, one might think she’d be out there luxuriating in the endless comfort it provides and keeping her bigoted views to herself. Maybe find a hobby beyond punching down at those most susceptible to hate and violence. Take up basket weaving or meditating or enroll in classes on human decency. Instead, this billionaire is wrapped up in her Twitter mentions and feels a need to make sure everyone still following her knows that with all of her earthly possessions and time available to her, she is still preoccupied with checking her DMs.

It would be sad and cringey if what she said didn’t encourage more discrimination against a marginalized group of people, many of whom probably grew up reading her series and believing them to be safe spaces. Now, Rowling gets to be the author who torched her own legacy and still laughed in her fans’ faces about it.

She still has supporters, of course, both fans and fellow industry folk alike. Actor Jim Broadbent who played Horace Slughorn in the sixth Harry Potter film, is the most recent actor to defend Rowling. In an interview with The Telegraph, he said:

“I think J .K. Rowling is amazing. I haven’t had to confront [the backlash] myself, but I would support her in that, I think, if it came to it.”

That Rowling can laugh about it all is appalling, if not surprising. We’re no longer expecting humanity or decency from her. Rowling alone is reason enough to hope for Twitter’s imminent downfall.
