A shooting in Allen, Texas — the second deadliest of the year — that claimed the lives of eight people and wounded another seven was reportedly perpetrated by a gunman who held neo-Nazi beliefs, identified with the “Right Wing Death Squad” and espoused white supremacist views in hundreds of social media postings. Democrats and Republicans have largely condemned the shootings. Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Twitter, has not.

Musk instead engaged with conspiracy theorists on Twitter who suggested that the shooting was a false-flag operation planned by the CIA. In response to a tweet from an account called The Redheaded Libertarian, which called the shooting a “psyop” and suggested that it was not even a good one, Musk replied, “This gets weirder by the moment.” When a Twitter conspiracy theorist suggests that the shooter was a CIA operative, Musk replied, “Very strange.” He also seemed to align with another Twitter Blue subscriber who also suggested that the public wasn’t being told the truth about the shooting.

The shooter also praised the Twitter account LibsofTikTok, an account run by Chaya Raichik, with whom Musk frequently engages on Twitter.

It is not the first time that Musk has engaged with right-wing misinformation. Soon after buying Twitter, Musk retweeted an article from a fake news site that suggested that Paul Pelosi’s attacker was a gay lover.

For many, Twitter itself has become unusable since Elon Musk took over ownership, even more so after he elevated Twitter Blue subscribers in both replies and on Twitter’s main timeline. The majority of Twitter Blue subscribers align with Elon Musk’s political views, such that Twitter itself has become largely an outlet for Musk and his followers to promote misinformation, bigotry, and conspiracy.
