Many may not realize it, but David Letterman is still making new material these days, even outside of his Netflix talk show. There is a YouTube channel dedicated to old clips from Letterman’s show, and within that channel, Letterman periodically appears with his old producer Barbara Gaines to shoot the shit. Barbara Gaines has been with Letterman basically since the beginning (she began as a production assistant on Late Night in 1980), working as the executive producer of The Late Show with David Letterman over the last 15 years of that show. Gaines — who has been awarded for her trailblazing LGBTQ+ work — also belongs to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Straight Synagogue in New York, which just makes me happy (Gaines and her partner have been married since 1991 and have a child together).

That is neither here nor there, except that the premise of “The Barbara Gaines Show” on the YouTube channel is essentially that David Letterman does most of the talking. Letterman likes to talk about his love of Taylor Swift, reminisce about old , and challenge Tucker Carlson to fights, as he did this week.

Letterman’s reasoning is to prove what we all know to be true: That Tucker Carlson’s entire schtick is an act. Tucker Carlson is not dumb, but “if you’re a contrarian, like Tucker, that’s where you make the money.”

“Tucker is a showman. He knows it, and he knows I know it,” Letterman said in the video. “So what I’ve decided to do to prove that it’s all an act, is that he and I are going to fight.”

To what end is unclear, except that Dave promises that he will lose the fight and that Tucker Carlson will have to beat him unconscious … “he gets the publicity of beating me unconscious. Who wouldn’t want that on his résumé?”

It’s all set. The contract is all ready. Tucker Carlson just has to sign. “He is announcing to the world, again, that he’s just making this stuff up. Nobody thinks that he’s what he presents himself. This is grand. This is good for me, and good for him, and he can go back to hosting game shows.”
