Congress Devolves into Chaos Over Fake Eyelashes and MTG's 'Bad-Built Butch Body'

The House Oversight Committee meeting on Thursday night, which was supposed to focus on a sham resolution to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress, devolved into a mess of personal attacks and petty bickering. Leading the charge — as usual — was the exhausting Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who took an unnecessary jab at Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s (D-Texas) appearance, saying, “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”

Democrats, led by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), moved to strike Greene’s words from the record and demand an apology. Greene, in turn, taunted AOC. “Are your feelings hurt?” AOC shot back, “Oh, girl? Baby girl. Don’t even play.”

Greene then had the audacity to attack AOC’s intelligence when the latter declined to debate her. “You don’t have enough intelligence,” Greene said, as members of Congress on both sides of the aisle audibly groaned.

Despite repeated demands from Democrats to strike Greene’s words and force an apology, Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) ruled that Greene’s insults didn’t violate House rules against engaging in “personalities” during debate.

The chaos peaked when Rep. Crockett asked for clarification on personal attacks, wondering if someone talking about “somebody’s bleach blonde, bad-built butch body” would be considered engaging in personalities. From there, it went completely off the rails.

For what it’s worth, nearly an hour after the hearing was derailed, the committee voted 24-20 along party lines to recommend holding Garland in contempt for failing to turn over audio recordings of President Biden.

To whatever extent the GOP at some point found the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, and Matt Gaetz useful and/or entertaining, it certainly feels like even Republicans are exhausted by them. Gaetz ousted their Speaker; Boebert gave a handjob during Beetlejuice (and likely won’t be back next year), and Greene is still trying to oust the new speaker over even the objections of Trump. Republican congressmen are even calling her Moscow Marjorie now.

I should also note that, at some point during this mess, MTG insisted, “I think I look pretty good for someone about to turn 50.” The insult clearly got to her.
