Did You Ever Think Marvel Movies Look Kinda Ugly? You're Not Alone

I have a complicated relationship with comic book movies. I don’t really watch the stuff produced by DC, though, so I suppose I’m mostly referring to the Marvel ones. I love them for lovingly bringing these giant, colorful superhero creations to life, and for doing it with the help of such great talent behind, and in front of, the camera. I’m less keen on — though understanding of — their hyper-controlling, megacapitalist assembly line approach to production.

What really bugs me, though, is one of the consequences of that assembly line approach: Marvel’s flattening of two of the most visceral components of cinema: music and color. Tony Zhou at ‘Every Frame A Painting’ has already posted a pretty cool video breakdown of the former; and now YouTube user Patrick (H) Willems has put together a analysis of the latter.

Check it out:

Of course, there are many, many more factors at play here than can be explored in short videos like these, but they’re valuable nevertheless for what they contribute to the conversation.
