'Sex Ed' Trailer: This Clears Up Nothing

Sexual education is supposed to demystify sex and give teenagers a solid knowledge of sexual reproduction and sexual health. Sex Ed is supposed to be a sex rom- com about how the kid from The Sixth Sense can’t get laid. In both cases, if the information isn’t handled properly, people can become confused. And guys, I’m confused.

I’m not confused by the plot; that seems fairly straight forward. Haley Joel Osment is an inner city school teacher who is failing both at teaching kids about sex ed and at picking up women. Possibly the two are related.

No, I’m confused about the quality of the film. Parts (especially the kids asking about sex) look really funny, and show Osment as a capable straight-man. And it has a bunch of people I really like: Matt Walsh, Lamorne Morris, Rhetta. But plenty of other jokes/ reaction shots just don’t land right. (The “rain dance”? That’s painful.)

I really want Osment to do well and I really want to stop referring to him as “the kid from The Sixth Sense,” but I’m not sure if this is the movie that’s going to get it done.
