It’s not a unique opinion, but I really wish Ahnold had never been the governator. Not just because of his lack luster performance as governor, but because of how it’s impacted his career as aging action star.
See, Ahnold and I are inextricably linked: Terminator, Kindergarten Cop, Twins, Terminator 2. I loved his movies before I was old enough to understand what a truly despicable person he is. Ideally he could have just not groped and humiliated those women in the first place. But the fact that he groped a woman in 2000, and then ran for governor in 2003 proves just how little he thought of his actions. He’s an entitled asshole, and unfortunately has proven that he’ll mostly be forgiven for everything.
And now that the political phase of his life is over, he’s back to trying to be an action star. But that’s not how these things work. The respectability shift only goes one way. You can throw off your acting career to prove you’ve always had a serious political side or you can soften your political side by showing off your sense of humor on an episode of Parks and Rec, but you can’t just jump willy nilly between the two of them. Once you pick a lane, you stick with it. And between his lack of credibility as either a politician or an actor and his inability to not assault women, it would probably be smarter for him to just retire from both.
Arnold unfortunately has taken none of my advice, and was out promoting Terminator Genisys. And damnit, if he’s not still slightly charming at it.
Ugh. That “I’ll be back” skit with the Terminator impersonator? That’s why Arnold got to be a movie star. He does seem charismatic and personable. Only unfortunately now, he also made me think “I wonder if he fondled any of those women while he was posing for that picture.”
