'I Should Be In That Chair': Bee and Jones Fill In For an Ill Stewart

Jon Stewart took a rare sick day last night from The Daily Show, and Jason Jones took on hosting duties. But it should have been Samantha Bee. Jones did alright, but the crossover between correspondent personality and host is difficult. And during the interview (more of a reunion with Wyatt Cenac), she’s just better than he is.

The two host interview schtick was funny for about half a second, and then got awkward and overcrowded. And Bee’s amazing piece on police shootings is the only part of the show that works.



I’m hoping that the rationale behind giving hosting duties to Jones was that Bee was already getting the second segment, and the producers didn’t want to move too far from the standard host/ correspondent format. (That and not some horseshit “women can’t host” nonsense because that would be idiotic. Clearly.) But I would have much preferred Bee overload than the disjointed show we got. And it makes me even more sad that Bee won’t be taking over for Colbert in January. Watch out, Larry Wilmore, she’s gunning for you.
