Ever seen Free Solo? It’s a brilliant but utterly stomach-churning documentary about a free solo climber scaling El Capitan without any ropes or safety equipment. If you haven’t seen it and the thought of that makes you want to heave with anxiety, then this might not be the news story for you.
Police officers were called at around 5 in the morning London time with reports that a free climber was trying to go up The Shard. Emergency services were called to the scene after the man was seen near the top of the 95-story skyscraper. The Shard, the tallest building in the UK, is 1,016 feet high. A lot of Londoners are divided on the building, with some finding it a gorgeous addition to the city while others see it as an eyesore. And this dude RIGHT HERE decided to climb it. Free solo. With no wires or ropes or anything remotely safe.

AND HE WASN’T ARRESTED!
This isn’t the first time people have chosen The Shard as their climbing destination of choice in London. In 2013, a group of Greenpeace supporters made their way to the summit with a flag to protest Arctic oil drilling, but they had ropes and helmets and all the stuff you’re supposed to use when climbing. Base jumpers love it too, because why have all the deathly thrills of going up the thing when you can also just leap from it? It’s also featured in the new Spider-Man movie, so of course the memes are here.

I was hoping that the bloke climbing the Shard was doing it to throw an evil ring into the lava pool on the top floor, vanquishing all the forces of evil which have ruled over the land since it was built.

Free climbing! Maybe don’t do it?
