This Friday, VH1 will premiere RuPaul’s Drag Race’s ninth season. So start you engines and revel in the anticipation with a few stories of how the art of drag has mattered to its performers and admiring artists.

First up, meet season nine contestant Peppermint, a trans woman who found her truth through drag. “I used drag as my disguise to kind of transition underneath,” she shares in this touching video from Cosmopolitan.

But Peppermint isn’t the only woman using drag for self-discovery. With Lady Drag, these fierce queens are exploring femininity and themselves on their own terms. “For me the performance of femininity is a reclamation,” one performer explains, “and a kind of revolutionary act.”

And lastly, enjoy the Barbie drag of Mark Jonathan, an Instagram user who repaints dolls to look like famous drag queens, like Trixie Mattel, Naomi Small, and Violet Chachki.
