Are you watching Alpha House? I’m not asking that rhetorically. It turns out we’ve got no idea if anyone is watching Alpha House, and I’d really like to know. Because thanks to the recent holiday weekend, I’m watching Alpha House and it’s amazing. Here’s the show’s very first scene (NSFW):
Bill Murray unfortunately isn’t in the rest of the season, but with the other cast members, he’s barely missed. John Goodman, Clark Johnson, Matt Malloy and Mark Consuelos all play Republican Senators sharing a D.C. townhouse. Wanda Sykes plays the Democratic friend/ neighbor, and Amy Sedaris, Julie White and Yara Martinez play the Senators’ wives/ girlfriend. Oh, and Haley Joel Osment is there.
I’ve heard comparisons to Veep which make sense. The Senators aren’t as incompetent/ unlucky Selina Meyer, but I wouldn’t want them representing me. What separates Alpha House is the Senators’ declared moderate Republicanism. You know what’s funny? Watching Tea Partiers say ridiculously stupid things. You know what’s way funnier? Watching John Goodman talk to Tea Partiers saying ridiculously stupid things and having to formulate a response that will still make said Tea Partier vote for him. I’m not sure how many actors have a perfect face for “contempt combined with a desperate need for approval” in their wheelhouse, but they probably learned it from Goodman.
Of course part of the problem is that Alpha House is an Amazon original, and even with Transparent the original programming isn’t a compelling reason to get a Prime membership. It should definitely be a compelling reason to sign up for the free trail period, and mainline all 9 hours of the show though. Come on. Do it for Bill. Don’t make him cry again.
