HBO had an “event” today where the network discussed its future. It’s a marketing opportunity. For the record, CEO Casey Bloys first cleared the air by acknowledging that he did, indeed, tweet at critics from sock puppet accounts. He apologized. Then, they got down to business. Here’s what we learned:
— The second season of House of Dragon will premiere in early summer 2024. True Detective: North Country returns in January, which we already knew.
— True Detective and House of Dragon should keep subscribers on the hook for the first half of the year, but do not expect to see another season of Euphoria or The White Lotus to fill in the rest of the year. Both of those series have been pushed to 2025 because of the strikes.
— The It prequel Welcome to Derry has also been pushed to 2025.
— There’s still plenty of content to look forward to next year. There will be another season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, as well as The Regime with Kate Winslet, The Sympathizer with Robert Downey Jr., and another installment of The Jinx. There will also be another season of Tokyo Vice (finally), and season three of both Hacks and Sex Lives Of College Girls. My Brilliant Friend and Industry will also return in the back half of 2024, which reminds me that I need to catch up on My Brilliant Friend and Industry.
— The writers are back in the room on … And Just Like That. It does not require a lot of post-production VFX, so maybe they can get it back on the air in 2024?
— Penguin has been pushed off its original Spring 2024 premiere to the fall.
— Dune and Crazy Rich Asians have television spin-offs in the works, too.
— Season two of The Last of Us will start filming in early 2024.
— Barry Jenkins’ sequel to The Knick is not likely to move ahead (boooo!)
