This story about Jim Thornton, the announcer on Wheel of Fortune, is genuinely bizarre. Here’s what we know: Jim Thornton — who took over as announcer on Wheel of Fortune in 2011, following Charlie O’Donnell’s death — has been suspended from the show. The network is investigating.
The details are sparse. Thornton was on a plane. A passenger complained about something, the pilot called law enforcement, and they met Thornton at the gate. He was wearing a Wheel of Fortune jacket. That’s essentially it, aside from what Thornton’s lawyer claims: “My client did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with any crime. When questioned about the complaint made by a fellow passenger on the flight, law enforcement spoke to him for five minutes or less, immediately determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and told my client he was free to go.”
So here’s the puzzle: if nothing illegal happened, why the suspension? Why not just move on? If it was truly minor, why has Wheel of Fortune not only recast the role but started editing Thornton out of already-recorded episodes? You don’t do that unless you’re bracing for impact — for the kind of video that’s inevitably coming because everyone on a plane has a phone. And you don’t recast if you expect this will all blow over after an investigation.
Yet somehow there’s no video. No leaked footage. Nothing. Whatever happened was bad enough to end his tenure but apparently not illegal. Bad enough to warrant a full scrub from previously taped episodes. Bad enough that the network clearly expects it to blow up.
I’m genuinely at a loss. All I know is that the man had the easiest job in television and somehow managed to blow it up.
