Last night, Rick and Morty returned with the first episode of the second half of Season Four. If that’s not confusing enough, the sci-fi series threw fans for a loop with “Never Ricking Morty,” an anthology episode that threw the Interdimensional Cable setup out the window in favor of a meta Story Train. Confused? So were Twitter users.
Here’s how fans responded to the return of Rick and Morty:

All the references about storytelling structure, the Bechdel test, and TV episode plotting proved too inside baseball for some viewers.

“Shut up, Morty, you’re fourteen. You watch videos of people on YouTube reacting to fucking YouTube. I’ll be the judge of when we get too meta.” #rickandmorty pic.twitter.com/fTcCSam7bR

Finally, Rick and Morty left us with condemnation of capitalism and promise of a real website that totally wasn’t.
Papa Sanchez on point as usual lmao.

#RickandMorty coming in hot with that extra layer of meta getting us all to look up a website that doesn't exist, because, consumerism is the human experience now. pic.twitter.com/z22Q7SsFD8

Rick and Morty literally took all the meta in one episode and killed it. Then made us understand capitalism is the MOST important thing apart from understanding our own existence and purpose even our own beliefs! #rickAndMorty pic.twitter.com/EaRpZCctNp
