Here’s the latest in television news:
Ahead of its season four premiere, Netflix has wisely renewed Lincoln Lawyer for a fifth season. However, in case you missed it, Netflix has also wisely canceled The Abandons, which was wise because it was terrible but also because the showrunner Kurt Sutter abandoned ship before shooting on the first season was even completed.
As CBS so often does, they’ve renewed almost their entire slate of series. What’s notable is what they have not renewed yet: Watson and DMV are on the bubble. I’m not sure either particularly deserves renewal — I quit on Watson after a mediocre first season, and DMV is fine, at best, which is a shame because it should be so much better with that cast.
Likewise, in case you missed it, The Great British Bake-Off has replaced the outgoing Prue Leith with Nigella Lawson, which feels like great casting to me.
I was worried that the SNL writers would do that thing they too often do with very handsome hosts and make every other sketch about how hot they are. If the promo is any indication, however, they’ve decided to instead focus on how tall Alexander Skarsgård is. Honestly, it’s a pretty decent promo, although it’s Ben Marshall who makes it work at the end.
Speaking of SNL, two alums — Ego Nwodim and Devon Walker — have landed in the cast for the Barbershop tv series. I actually loved the first Barbershop movie, so hopefully it measures up. That cast will also include Ziwe and Tituss Burgess.
Here’s where we hit you with trailers for some upcoming television series, beginning with DTF: St. Louis, which I promise is probably even more bizarre than the trailer suggests. It comes from showrunner genius Steven Conrad (Patriot), so expect it to be very good, but also thank God it’s a mini-series, so it presumably cannot be cancelled after one season. It stars Jason Bateman, David Harbour, and Linda Cardellini. It premieres March 11th on HBO Max.
The first season of Hulu’s Paradise was a good show with one very great episode. We’ll see if they can keep it up with the second season, which returns on February 23rd.
And finally, many may know I have an obsession with holes. No. Television shows where holes play a crucial role: Outer Range, Night Sky, 1899, etc. This one is not technically about a hole, but it is called Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole and its main character’s name is Harry Hole. I also love a good scandi noir. They’ve basically reverse-engineered a series for me. Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole premieres on Netflix on March 26th.
