It really is the Misogyny Olympics over there in Nick and Vanessa Lachey’s Netflix dystopia: just when you think the men on Love Is Blind can’t get any worse, some weirdo gives his fiancée a hard time about birth control.
No one could blame you if you missed the whole thing between Amy Cortés, 28, and Johnny McIntyre, also 28, amidst the love triangles and breakups with the other couples. Actually, I found myself skipping over Cortés and McIntyre’s touchy-feely convos and awkward dates because I found them to be too cringe, for lack of a better word. They’re like middle schoolers who bonded over their mutual love for video games and snacks. I can picture them falling asleep on the phone with each other at night and waking up to “Good morning!” texts. It hurts my cold black heart.
But then there was that little cliffhanger at the end of the most recent episode when they were fighting about the fact that Cortés, a fully grown woman, isn’t on birth control. This is a problem for Johnny, who says he wants kids eventually but not right now and doesn’t understand the choice since all of his ex-girlfriends were on birth control. “What about condoms?!” you cry, which would have been a logical next option, but instead, the conversation turned to how McIntyre could get a reversible vasectomy. Women everywhere shouted “RUN!” at their screens.
Cortés spoke about the whole thing to Entertainment Weekly:
“It was more so what I would be putting into my body that I just didn’t feel comfortable with,” she said. “Fully support it for any woman who decides to do it, I feel like women should be empowered to do what they feel like is best for them. But in that moment I just felt like I didn’t want to do that. So we explored other options.” One would think condoms would be one of those options, and she said they “Definitely had conversations about a little bit of everything,” including condoms, which she called “a sense of birth control in that sense.” Hoo boy.
“It was a surprise because I didn’t expect it to be as big of a deal,” she said of McIntyre’s reaction to her not being on the pill. Uh, yeah. Duh, girl. “Obviously it is a huge deal, especially if you’re considering to marry somebody. But he hadn’t been with somebody in the past that wasn’t on birth control, so I feel like for it him was more of a shock, which was more of a shock for me as well because I feel like I know so many women that are not on birth control. It was just definitely very different based on both of our experiences.”
Cortés posted this on her Instagram stories this morning, which I am interpreting as a mic drop:
Meanwhile, on McIntyre’s Instagram:
Then there’s this interview, where McIntyre admits he was ill-informed but still doesn’t apologize for being an asshole:
I don’t know what to make of all this, but I know it’s not a woman’s job to educate her partner about contraception, and it certainly isn’t her job to defend the choices she makes about her body.
So, I hope she did run, far and fast, and I hope he got that vasectomy before she did. And bought some condoms.
