The Will Ferrell hosted SNL didn’t quite live up to the two episodes prior to it, or the Ryan Gosling episode, or even really the poorly written episode with a enthusiastic and very game Colman Domingo. Ferrell was there, but never quite displayed the go-for-broke energy that he’s known for in sketch comedy.
Except in one skit, which was ultimately cut for time. I have a feeling, however, that it had less to do with time and more to do with the logistics of a skit featuring several very young and unpredictable kids airing at midnight. But it sure as hell worked during rehearsal, even if Will Ferrell broke a couple of times, because who could actually keep a complete straight face while yelling at a bunch of adorable children.
The skit sees Ferrell playing basically an aggressive bouncer at a kid’s show featuring the Toobin Family. It’s the job of Ferrell — sporting a mullet — to keep the kids from doing what kid’s do: Getting excited about seeing kid’s characters in person. I’m honestly surprised the kids managed to be this well behaved during rehearsal, and even more surprised that no one lost it when Ferrell picked a kid up and threaten to throw him.
It’s just a shame that the rest of the episode didn’t have this much chaotic Will Ferrell energy.
