We made it to October, folks! Which means we’ve got 31 days to indulge our nastiest, scariest, bloodiest viewing inclinations with abandon… or if that’s not your bag, I guess you’ll be stuck trying to dodge all that horror while waiting for those cheesy Christmas-themed romances to drop. Me? I’ll be chugging some spiked mulled cider and watching Creepshow, thanks!
I’m breaking format to add Shudder here this month, because I feel the need to remind everyone that Creepshow is very entertaining. Why am I stumping so hard for this horror anthology? Three reasons: I’m easily pleased, I have a short attention span, and “stumping” sounds like I got my leg chopped off, which is thematically relevant! Anyway, new episodes drop on Thursdays and there are only six in total so enjoy it while it lasts!
Oh look — more platforms! Apple TV+ and Disney+ are launching in November, but Facebook Watch has been chugging along for awhile now, so I figured maybe I should start paying attention? That Elizabeth Olsen show, Sorry For Your Loss, returns for its second season today. But the premiere I’m most looking forward to is Limetown, which is an adaptation of the hit podcast starring Jessica Biel and Stanley Tucci. It’s about a journalist investigating the mysterious disappearances of 300 people from a research facility, and it launches October 16.
Phew, alright, I’m back on solid ground. This month Hulu has a season 7 of LetterKenny dropping on October 14, and the debut of the limited series Looking For Alaska on October 18. That one is an adaptation of the John Green novel, produced by Josh Schwartz, all about… teenagers? I’m gonna say teenagers. And emotions. Young, fresh, teen emotions.
But the real news is the return of Castle Rock on October 23! The Stephen King mashup anthology’s second season focuses on Lizzy Caplan as wacky (“whacky”?) nurse Annie Wilkes, while Eighth Grade’s Elsie Fisher plays her daughter and Tim Robbins returns to the King fold as Pop Merrill. Does Caplan absolutely nail the correct pronunciation of “cockadoodie”? YOU BETCHA!
The third season of Billy Bob Thornton’s Goliath returns on October 4, but October 18 is the date you’ll wanna mark in your calendars — because that’s when the new original series, Modern Love, launches. Inspired by the New York Times column of the same name, the series explores romance by hiring ALL THE ACTORS YOU LOVE and putting them in the same damn place. Think I’m joking? Here’s the freakin’ cast: Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, Sofia Boutella (as a blonde!), Dev Patel, Hot Priest Andrew Scott, John Slattery, Olivia Cooke, Catherine Keener, James Saito, Cristin Milioti, Gary Carr, and so so so many more. I know I should be listing all the horror movies you could watch on Prime this month, but this is my rodeo and nothing frightens me more than knowing something is going to 100% make me cry. This looks cloying as hell but effective!
Did I say that crying is scary? I meant puberty. That’s the thing that freaks me out. Which is probably why Netflix is kicking things off with the return of Big Mouth on October 4. New cast members include Thandie Newton as Missy’s Hormone Monstress, and Ali Wong as a new student whom I’m sure absolutely no one is going to awkwardly hit on. Nope. She’ll be fine.
Also arriving on October 4 is the original film In The Tall Grass, based on the novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill and directed by Cube’s Vincenzo Natali. It’s about some people who get lost in a field of, um, tall grass? BUT SCARY. I dig it already:
Also also on October 4 is “kid with super powers” show, Raising Dion, in which a young mother discovers that her son, uh, has super powers. But seriously, for a familiar story this one at least looks visually marvelous. Alisha Wainwright, Michael B. Jordan, Ja’Siah Young, and Jason Ritter star.
And later this month (October 25, to be precise), Eddie Murphy stars in Dolemite Is My Name, based on the true story of Rudy Ray Moore, the legendary performer who created a Blaxpoitation phenomenon in the 70s. The movie also stars Wesley Snipes, Craig Robinson, Keegan-Michael Key, Chris Rock, Snoop Dogg, Tituss Burgess, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
And that’s it, right? OH NO WAIT — THERE’S THAT BREAKING BAD MOVIE! Jesse Pinkman is back in El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie on October 11, directed by Vince Gilligan.
