Over the summer, there was some fairly amusing controversy over country singer Stella Lefty, whose song “Boston” has been omnipresent for the last few months. It’s a very good song. She also clearly ripped off Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season.”
Noah Kahan has since received a songwriting credit for the song, but when the Kahan’s reps first picked up on the similarities, Stella Lefty tried to position herself as the poor, hapless songwriter that a massive star was going after because Olivia Rodrigo gained some sympathy when Taylor Swift went after her for songwriting credits on “Deja Vu” because of its similarity to Swift’s “Cruel Summer.” The gambit, however, quickly backfired for Stella Lefty because 1) the similarities between “Boston” and “Stick Season” are insanely obvious, and 2) Stella Lefty is a nepo baby of the highest order — her father is billionaire Groupon co-founder Eric Lefkofsky.
It’s a month late because SNL doesn’t air over the summer, but Veronika Slowikowska parodies Stella Lefty in a cut for time sketch on the season 51 premiere. During a “Weekend Update” segment, Slowikowska — playing Stella Lefty — introduced several new songs, almost all of which were about Boston (Lefty is from Illinois), and all of which were clearly ripped off.
It’s better than most from the premiere, but also: Slowikowska has a great voice.
SNL returns this weekend with host Dakota Johnson, making her third appearance.
