Time is a funny thing. For instance, when you have kids, the days are long, and the weeks are short. I used to think that was just a saying, but it’s true. I have felt it extensively since my twins were born. Years have started flying by as well. That felt very apparent yesterday when Pat Sajak announced that he would retire from Wheel Of Fortune after 41 seasons as its host.

It wasn’t Pat retiring that felt jarring; forty years is a long time to do anything. I also don’t have any particular attachment to the host. My wife and I often watch the one-two punch of Jeopardy and Wheel Of Fortune, and I tend to tune out for the latter. It doesn’t help that most of the show involves Pat being an absolute prick to Vanna White. No, what slapped me in the face like I landed on bankrupt, was the announcement of the frontrunner for Sajak’s position: None other than young upstart Ryan Seacrest.

It was only yesterday that Seacrest made his big splash as co-host and then solo host of American Idol.

What’s that? American Idol premiered over twenty years ago? The young upstart I mentioned is almost fifty? Well, now you understand why this so thoroughly jars me! It’s not that I didn’t know Seacrest had been around for a while. I think it just didn’t hit me how long that’s been. Time is cruel and makes no sense.

While some say that Seacrest is the frontrunner, allegedly he’s just one of many interested. Fingers crossed for that. This is an opportunity to shake things up. Don’t bring in another bland host. Give me somebody fun. Why not someone like Bowen Yang or Melissa Villaseñor? It doesn’t have to be an SNL person, but that would be a more exciting option in my eyes. Anyone who isn’t a “cookie cutter” host and can help me ignore the slow but sure march of time.
