BBC Three’s long-awaited British version of RuPaul’s Drag Race is on its way. RuPaul will return as the host and Michelle Visage will be there as a judge, while British talk-show hosts Graham Norton and Alan Carr will swap in as the third judge. So far, announces gusts judges include Jade from Little Mix, Andrew Garfield, Maisie Williams, Michaela Coel from Chewing Gum, Lorraine Kelly, and Cheryl Cole. That last one will be fun given the name of one of the contestants. The queens for season one were just announced, so we’ve trailed through Instagram to get a good look at them!
Baga Chipz, 29, London
Blu Hydrangea, 23, Belfast
Divina De Campo, 35, West Yorkshire
Crystal, 34, London
Sum Ting Wong, 30, Birmingham
Cheryl Hole, 25, Essex
Gothy Kendoll, 21, Leicester
Vinegar Strokes, 35, London
Scaredy Kat, 20, Wiltshire
The Vivienne, 27, Liverpool
And that’s our line-up.
Honestly, I was hoping for something a little tackier. And at least one Scottish queen. The best elements of British camp are the DIY, 20 cigarettes and a pint down your local, Pat Butcher’s earrings, original Sugababes, Lily Savage, Jodie Marsh with belts over her tits slapdash realness. Polished perfection and British camp are not mutually exclusive but it’s a hell of a lot more fun when the ‘Get outta my pub!’ nature of it is embraced. Where is that Kat Slater energy? I hope we see that in the UK Drag Race and it isn’t just a direct recreation of the original.
Mama Ru has made a trip across the pond in search for a queen with the most charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent in all the land.
