I like Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, and I love detective series, particularly ones with a layer of social commentary. But Apple TV+’s Criminal Record was thoroughly mediocre. Yet, despite the streamer’s apparent efforts to tighten their belt, they’ve renewed it for a second season.

I appreciate that Apple TV+ gives great, underseen shows like Trying, Loot, and Acapulco several seasons to find an audience, because they deserve an audience! But renewing bland series like Dark Matter, Criminal Record, and Palm Royale doesn’t make much sense to me. Unless they improve markedly, they are not going to pick up new viewers with additional seasons.

We have release dates for some upcoming and well-liked series: Bad Sisters will return with its second season on November 13th. This is definitely an Apple TV+ series that deserves a second season (even if the premise may be more difficult to pull off a second time). The third season of Lincoln Lawyer will premiere on Netflix on October 17th, and HBO has set the date for the fourth and final season of My Brilliant Friend on September 9th.

Anya Taylor-Joy, who first found big success in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, is returning to the streamer to star in an adaptation of Bella Mackie’s 2022 novel How to Kill Your Family, which is about the illegitimate daughter who vows to kill every member of her father’s family because he abandoned her and her mother.

Among new series in development: Poltergeist, a Pacific Rim prequel, and an animated companion series for Peacock’s Ted.

In casting news, Katey Sagal will play Dr. Kureha in One Piece (a role many wanted Jamie Lee Curtis to take on, but her schedule prevented it), and Gina Rodriguez has joined the cast of Will Trent in its third season. The second season of Beef will be about two feuding couples. One of those couples will be played by Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny. The other may be Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac.

Finally, here’s the trailer for Hulu’s Rivals, based on a book that Kayleigh says is called a “bonkbuster” in the UK. It looks fun, but David Tennant also feels weirdly out of place. Like, when I think about him as a rich dude, all I can think about is Scrooge McDuck.
