Renewals and Cancellations: 'White Collar,' 'Palm Royale,' and Paget Brewster

Yesterday, on the same day the second season of Criminal Minds: Evolution premiered on Paramount+, the streamer renewed it for a third season. As a latecomer to the series, I am thrilled about this, mostly because of Paget Brewster’s gray hair and sociopathic serial killer Matty Saracen. I watched the first two episodes of the second season last night, and I gotta say: For a detective series, it is unusually grisly. This season features an UnSub who keeps stabbing out his victims’ eyes. Not cool. But also, I’m here for Brewster’s Silver Fox era.

Apple TV+ renewed Palm Royale for a second season. I figured they would because the series has been charting well on their top ten (not that it takes much — Ted Lasso is still number 2 right now). And the first few episodes are good. But then it falls apart, and then that ending. Ooof. I’ve been tracking a lot of bad endings this spring, but that was easily one of the worst — it really gives A Man in Full a run for its money.

USA/Peacock hasn’t even officially picked up the Suits reboot yet, but they’re still apparently moving ahead with a White Collar reboot because America loves the blue sky era of the USA Network. Creator Jeff Easton is writing the pilot, and Matt Bomer, Tim DeKay, and Tiffany Thiessen are game to return. It will even honor the late Willie Garson.

We mentioned last month that Netflix renewed Three Body Problem, but now we have learned that it’s been renewed for two additional seasons, so they’ll be able to finish out the trilogy of novels upon which it is based. I don’t know if I’m in the minority or not, but that’s a show that I really liked during a spring that was sorely lacking in good shows.

For those who are still keeping up with The CW, they’ve now canceled almost everything from the old network, save for All American, which has been renewed for a seventh season. All American: Homecoming, the spin-off, has been canceled, effective at the end of the third season.

Prime Video will reboot American Gladiator. Again. The Running Man portended a future where reality competition series would be a matter of life or death, and I have to admit: That’s the only way I’d watch an American Gladiator reboot, preferably starring social media influencers.

Finally, in ratings news, Star Wars: Acolyte reached 4.8 million viewers on its first day, the biggest launch for Disney+ of 2024. I don’t care for Star Wars, but I liked Acolyte, and as I told Mike: I don’t know if that is a good omen or bad for the series.
